Curb Appeal Will Help Close The Deal!

People are really out house hunting these days. Some homes are only being given a drive-by look and you need to have your home jump out at that potential buyer.

Some simple and inexpensive landscape additions can get your buyer off the curb and in the house for a better look and potential sale.

Add a splash of blooming shrubs curbside of home:  Dwarf bougainvillea are in full bloom right now, along with hibiscus, gaillardia, milkweed and lantana.  Add a scented gardenia, also in full bloom now, to draw them to the front door.

Add a colorful piece of pottery at the entry door or walkway approach:  Put some flowing color or trellised vines in the pottery.  Or add a small pot fountain for visual and auditory allure.

Add that one perfect specimen palm:  Update your yard's look with a Bismarkia, Red Feather Palm or other special palm.

Do the little things with regard to maintenance of the yard that can make a cleaner, sharper landscape:
  • Remove all brown fronds.
  • Check irrigation system and get good coverage of all sod and shrub areas.
  • Keep the yard 'mowed and blowed'.
Stop by our new outdoor showroom at R. S. Walsh Landscaping - In The Garden located at 3889 Sanibel Captiva Road, Sanibel Island, just across from the Sanibel School.  We can show you different plants for color and pottery.  We can also talk to you about maintenance, landscape lighting, plant and tree placement and any other landscape concerns.   Call Robert Walsh - In The Garden  239-395-5859 or email him at robert@rswalsh.com.  Visit our website at www.rswalsh.com.

Go Green

Since flowers are still the most popular gift for Mother's Day (organically grown flowers, we hope) - what is a Mother to do with the years of accumulated vases?

Our Green tip for May is: Ideas to recycle florist vases.
  • Keep herbs fresh. Fill the bottom with cool water, submerge the cut ends of the herbs in the water, and store them in the refrigerator. This works especially well for basil and parsley, and can extend the freshness of these herbs for several days. You can also do this with asparagus, which will wilt if it's not kept in water.
  • Create a new shell arrangement.  Line up several clear glass vases on a windowsill, a mantel or a table and fill them with your favorite shells.
  • Grow your own personal mangrove.  Put shells at the bottom, add some sea water and a singular mangrove root - it will soon sprout and slowly grow.  You'll be amazed how elegant this simple root can look when showcased
  • Organize craft or hardware supplies. Smaller, wide-mouthed vases can be used to hold buttons, beads, small mosaic tiles and other miscellaneous pieces. Or, in the workshop, use them to hold different sized nails, screws, bolts or nuts. It's easy to see the contents through the glass; just make sure the mouth of the vase is wide enough to reach your hand in.
  • Pay it forward. If you are an avid flower gardener, keep a few vases on hand so that you can share your gorgeous blooms. Use your extra vases to make lovely flower arrangements to give to friends or bring as a hostess gift for a dinner party.
  • Make a mosaic. Colored or textured vases can make beautiful mosaic pieces; lay out a few sheets of newspaper and break the vases to pieces with a hammer. Being careful not to cut yourself, embed the glass pieces in plaster or concrete to make anything from a garden stepping stone to a paperweight. Just make sure that no sharp edges are exposed.
  • Decorate it. Use a vase with a shape that appeals to you as the base for a craft project. Decoupage it with pretty papers, or use translucent paints to decorate it with designs. These projects are especially good rainy-day activities for kids, and can make great gifts for parents or grandparents.
  • Donate them. If all else fails, and you've done everything you can do with your stash of random vases, fill them with inexpensive flowers from the supermarket, and drop them off at your local senior center or hospital, and brighten someone else's day.

Recipe of the Month

Nacho Ordinary Mexican Restaurant

Cantina Captiva
Captiva Cantina

Chiles Rellenos
Courtesy of CANTINA CAPTIVA on Captiva Island

Ingredients
4 fresh poblano chile peppers
1/2 pound lean ground beef
1 onion, chopped
1 clove garlic, chopped
salt and pepper to taste
3 eggs, separated
1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
2 roma (plum) tomatoes, chopped
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup corn oil

Directions
1. Place whole peppers over an open flame (gas burner) or under the broiler. Roast, turning frequently until evenly black and blistered. Remove from heat, place in a plastic bag, and let them sweat for a while. This will allow the skins to peel of easily.

2. While the peppers are sweating, place the ground beef in a skillet over medium-high heat. Cook, stirring to crumble, until evenly browned. When beef is fully cooked, add the onion, garlic and tomato, and cook for a few more minutes. Season to taste with salt and pepper.

3. Remove the peppers from the bag, and peel off the burnt skin. You may wish to wear protective gloves. Run peppers under cool running water to rinse away any burnt pieces. Make a small vertical slit in the side of the peppers, and remove the seeds and veins. Stuff each pepper halfway with the ground beef mixture, then fill the rest of the way with shredded cheese. Close the slits, and secure with toothpicks.

4. Whip egg whites in a large glass or metal bowl until thick and fluffy. Add the egg yolks, and whip for a minute to blend in.

5. Meanwhile, heat 1/4 inch of oil in a large heavy skillet over medium-high heat. Coat the stuffed peppers with a light dusting of flour, then dip them in the egg so they are fully covered. Carefully place in the hot oil, and fry on both sides until golden. Drain on paper towels, then serve on a large platter.

OLE'!!!

Don't feel like cooking???.....CLICK HERE  to go to the CANTINA CAPTIVA  website to view the menu....Then go celebrate like it is Cinco de Mayo everyday!!!
