Thoughts in Print - by Pastor Sue

Has anyone outside of church ever had reason to ask you about your faith? You know, to explain what you believe about God; to make a statement of your faith? For the last couple of years we've been asking our Confirmation youth to do just that. We've been asking them to pick a bible verse that means something to them and then to tell us why they think it's special. And I have to tell you that they did a wonderful job with the assignment. While many of them weren't happy about having 'homework' (yikes) they did it. And we published what they had to say not only in their Confirmation service bulletin but in a brochure that anyone can take home and read and benefit from; not only from the wonderful bible verses they selected, but from the really cool stuff they had to say.

Through our visioning process we've actually created something that all of us can use to help us with being better able to express who we are in relationship to God and our faith. It's our Purpose Statement and Guiding Principles. Pastor Jones did a wonderful job of speaking to our Purpose Statement in his last Lifelines article so I thought I'd add my 'two cents worth' and expand his great work into our Guiding Principles. If you haven't seen them yet they look like this:

  • We keep all that we do centered in the life and message of Jesus Christ.
  • We warmly welcome and actively invite everyone in the openness of God's love.
  • We regularly celebrate our faith through diverse and creative expressions of word, song and sacrament.
  • We follow Christ's example by gladly sharing who we are and what we have in thoughtful service to each other, our communities, and all people in need.
  • We nurture and support all people through prayer and care.
  • We value and participate in learning opportunities for spiritual growth.
  • We create opportunities to build and strengthen Christian community.

So how can this be a personal statement of faith? Take a look at those bullets above again and read them by replacing the word 'we' with the word 'I' and the word 'our' with the word 'my' and so forth. If you're able to faithfully admit following even a few of them then you're a person whose faith impacts the way you live your life and it's probably visible to those around you. If you're that kind of person someone might just ask you about your faith. Because you know what? The greatest faith statement any of us can make is the one we make by the way we live; how our words and actions reflect the love of God and the example of Jesus Christ.

So go ahead... Take the challenge... Put that 'I' in those bullets up there and grow in your walk of faith in the process. Because it's just part of who we are at Lord of Life!

- Peace, Pastor Sue

Thank You

Lutheran Care  Thank you for all of the "goodies" being put into the Lutheran Care box.  The residents and staff are most appreciative.  Are you planning on doing any spring cleaning?  If so, save any knick knacks for the Home.  Items are used on the monthly sale table as well as for a residents' gift shop in December where residents select gifts for family members at no charge.

Grace Place News

grace place  Friday, June 1st, Ms. Ruth's class invited their fathers to join them as an honor for Father's Day.  Remarkably, all fathers attended except for one, but Grandpop stepped in.  What a great testament to the fathers of our 4 year olds!  It was fun to see some 40ish men doing relays down the hall.  It seemed a great time was had by all.

On the last week of school we had many outside activities such as Nursery Rhyme Day with games like Baa Baa Black Sheep where the children had to fill 3 bags of
packing peanuts before their teacher did, Humpty Dumpty ( squirting eggs with water guns until they fell off a ledge) and Jack Be Nimble, jumping over pretend candles.

Thursday was Water Day with three pools, a sprinkler and water guns.  EVERYONE got wet!!!  The last day of school was the Family Picnic.  The families got to eat and relax
together while the children played in a bounce house and had their faces painted.  And so year five ends.  The hallways will be quiet until VBS.

Many thanks to both Pastor Jones' for teaching the children Chapel lessons each week and to Sue Dreisbach for her special gift of music to the children.

Women's Ministries

Just a reminder- there is a Steering Committee meeting June 12th at 7 o'clock.

June 26th we are heading to Bridge of Peace to serve dinner to the VBS.  There will be a sign up sheet for people to donate food.  We will be bringing Baked ziti, salad, bread and ice cream cups. All donations of food will be greatly appreciated.

If any woman wants to be added the Women's Ministries email list, please call me Betty Mastrillo (609) 410-0162 or email me at mastrillo@verizon.net.  !
Thank you!

Build Day "Justin Gets a Bedroom Bathroom"

Fuller Center Update:

"I wanted to share the link to the video the Fuller Center made for our build day in Tabernacle.  All I can say is wow!  You need to take 5 minutes and watch this, it's a testimony to the excellent work the Fuller Center does here in NJ!  Thanks to everyone who has helped us so far.  Don't be a stranger, we'll be out there every Saturday until it's done."

 - Neil Brown, NJ Fuller Center

Fifteen bicyclists who are traveling across the country to raise funds and awareness for the Fuller Center for Housing arrived Friday to Lord of Life. The group is part of the Fuller Center East Coast Bike Adventure which has been held for the past four years but this is the first time that they have included the New Jersey stop.  Riders are traveling from Maine to Key West, Florida with stops along the way to work on Fuller Center projects, talk about their mission and have some fun.

The team had dinner Friday night at Lord of Life where they dispersed with host families to bed down for the night. At 7:00 am, they were back at Lord of Life for breakfast and then they headed over to the work site on Route 206. The group donned orange shirts identifying them and what they were doing.

Work began by putting up walls for a new handicapped accessible bathroom and bedroom for Seneca freshman, Justin Snodgrass who is afflicted with a disease which attacks his nervous system and has recently put him in a wheel chair. Justin cheered on the workers as they began building his new room. Justin told everyone that he intended to sleep there that night but his excitement was truly a bit premature as work had only just begun. Justin's home is also now equipped with a handicapped ramp and a concrete walkway thanks to the Fuller Center's Student Builders at Seneca High School. Funds for the bathroom/bedroom project were donated by the Canuso Foundation.

The bicycle teamed worked at the house into the evening getting the walls up. The night brought a bon fire at the Jennings home where a few of the riders were staying. On Sunday morning, the group split up to speak at the Marlton Methodist Church and Lord of Life. Those who attended morning services got to meet these dynamic individuals whose mission is to spread the word about the Fuller Center. There journey is truly inspiring.

That evening a farewell dinner was held at the Brubeck's home (Yes, Fran still had her arm swaddled in a sling). The evening ended with a birthday cake for bicyclist, Tom, who turned 70 on this trip.

Early Monday morning they headed to Avondale. Pennsylvania for the next leg of their journey. Thanks to everyone who made this trip a success. Members of the Fuller Center and Lord of Life continue to show what big and generous hearts they have. Justin's rooms still need work and muscle. If you haven't met Justin and want to get involved, please contact Neil Brown (you won't regret it).

Stewardship Nuggets

The heart is at the heart of giving!
The Bible doesn't say why Cain and Abel decided to present the first offering to the Lord as recorded in the Bible. However, "In the course of time Cain bought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the Lord. But Abel brought fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The Lord looked with favor on Abel and his offering," (Gen. 4:3,4). It seems that Cain was more casual in his approach to offering then Abel who carefully selected the best that he could bring. Abel put his heart into the giving. Is your heart into your giving?

Stewardship Team Needed

We still have the council stewardship position open, and are also looking for volunteers to support our year round emphasis and the fall campaign.  If interested please contact Pastor Dave.  Thanks!

Notice on CHANGE to your LifeLines Subscription!

calendarVery soon in June the LifeLines we will be changing (maybe - if things go well...) our service provider from 'Constant Contact' to 'Vertical Response' which will save the church much needed funds for our ministries.  The email will start to come from "Lord_of_Life_Lutheran_Church@mail.vresp.com" instead of this "LordLife.News@gmail.com" and will look a bit different from this current newsletter, but will continue to have relevant info about the Church and its ministries!  Here is a link to help ensure you get each and every issue by adding to your 'Safe Sender List' on your email program - more info on this is available here: http://tinyurl.com/78xdo5t   Let us know if you have any problems!

Senior High Youth Ministry

SHYM SUMMER MISSION TRIP - June 24-30, North Carolina  -- The time is almost here!  It's not too late to make a Miles to NC donation to help with the costs for transportation of the group.  We are still in need of more financial assistance. We will be traveling to North Carolina where Hurricane Irene did a great deal of damage last August. Our group will be helping to rebuild houses and help with ongoing clean-up efforts.

TidBits...

Holy Humor...

A friend was in front of me coming out of church one day, and the preacher was standing at the door as he always is to shake hands. He grabbed my friend by the hand and pulled him aside.
The Pastor said to him, "You need to join the Army of the Lord!"
My friend replied, "I'm already in the Army of the Lord, Pastor."
Pastor questioned, "How come I don't see you except at Christmas and Easter?"
He whispered back, "I'm in the secret service.
