Thoughts in Print - by Pastor Sue

A few years ago when I had LASIK surgery and could face the world without glasses for the first time since I was 9 years old, I treated myself to my first really good pair of sunglasses. I remember putting them on for the first time and walking outside on a bright sunny day and WOW everything looked wonderful! And the bronze coloring of the lenses gave everything a crisp appearance in a somewhat warmer color palette. I really loved those glasses... But I also know I was seeing things just a little differently than they really were.

This week as I read the daily devotional I've been using during Lent I was greeted with these words: "It's hard, mostly impossible, to see the world the way God does. Caught up in our own lives, we see the world mostly from our own narrow points of view. Perhaps in these next few moments, however, you can get a glimpse of what the Creator sees, and hear the message that God has for all the world to understand."

It is indeed impossible for us to see the world the way that God does. The first challenge is that we have a tendency to see only those things we want to see; we often turn away from things that bother or frighten us or even that tug at our heart or at our conscience. And then even those things we do see can sometimes seem to be "colored" somehow; made to look better or worse than they really are by our perspective or attitude in that moment.

I think Lent challenges us each and every year to open our eyes and our hearts and our minds in new and different ways. To see the world, and particularly other people and their situations, from God's point of view. To learn from the example that Jesus gave us of what's important to God, what gets God's attention and therefore should be important to us.

Have you found the time yet this Lent to search out what it is that God would have you see and hear and think about differently? To have your perspective challenged by the life and love of Christ? If not, I encourage you to make time. It's never too late to start, and I promise you won't be disappointed. And if you need ideas to help you, feel free to ask Pastor Jones or me. We're more than happy to offer some suggestions and to pray with and for you as you take your Lenten journey. Go on, give it a try, what can it hurt...

= ) Peace, Pastor Sue

Don't Forget your Thrivent Choice!

Help your favorite charities with Thrivent Choice Dollars!  No cost to you!
Giving back makes an important impact in people's lives. Last year alone, Thrivent Financial provided more than $100 million to help congregations, communities and individuals in need. Members who own Thrivent Financial products help make this support possible.
Thrivent Choice lets you recommend where some of Thrivent Financial's charitable outreach funds go by directing Choice Dollars and by participating in Voting Events.
In 2011 Lord of Life Lutheran Church received over $4100 from this program, and in 2012 we have received over $2000 thanks to Thrivent and it's investors directing these 'choice dollars' to our congregation.

How are Choice Dollars Determined? Eligible members are designated Choice Dollars based on their:  Insurance premiums; or Contract values; or Thrivent Financial volunteer leadership.

How Do I Direct My Designated Choice Dollars? Choose from Lutheran organizations nationwide, including your local congregation. It's easy!
1. Search for your preferred organization(s). (Lord of Life Lutheran Church is available)
2. Direct Choice Dollars online now or call 800-THRIVENT  (800-847-4836) and state "Thrivent Choice

Recurring Direction

Want to automatically direct your 2012 designated Choice Dollars to the same organization? Set up a recurring direction.

  • Choice Dollars will be automatically directed to your recommended organization when the balance reaches $10 Choice Dollars or more. At year-end, the entire balance will be distributed, including balances of less than $10 Choice Dollars.
  • The process remains in effect for 2012 unless you change or remove this option. You will receive a reminder email prior to funds being distributed.
  • You may only set a recurring direction for one organization.
  • This option is available for 2012 only.

OUR Mission Statement: Lord of Life Lutheran Church is a uniquely blended "family" of God's people who share their faith and life together through learning, serving and celebrating. We are committed to:
Growing spiritually as we open our lives to God's will and teachings.
Growing in service and stewardship as we reach out to support one another and our neighbors in need.
Growing in Christian outreach as we share the "Good News" of Jesus Christ with all people in the community inviting them into a deeper fellowship with God and His people.

Celebrating the joy of being loved by God and growing together in faith is who we are.
