Thoughts in Print - Pastor Sue
LENT - What does that word, that rapidly approaching season of the church year mean to you? Many of us who have been involved with the church for many years have a variety of memories of the various things we've participated in and experienced during this very special season in the church year. Lent for us in the Lutheran Church is a season of simplicity and preparation as well as a time of reflection. Often Lent is also thought to be a season where we consider giving things up as a way of honoring these 40 days leading up to Holy Week. But this year, Pastor Jones and I would like to challenge you to think about taking something on rather than giving something up. And not just for the season but for the long term...
Some years ago a Lutheran Pastor named Michael Foss introduced the idea that there are six things that "mark" someone as a disciple of Christ. They are:
- Daily Prayer
- Weekly Worship
- Bible Reading/Study
- Service to Others - both at and beyond the local congregation
- Encouraging Spiritual Growth in others through spiritual relationships
- Sharing freely of time, talent, and resources
As part of our Lenten discipline this year we'd like to encourage you to take on the challenge of:
- Praying for yourselves, the congregation, and our world on a daily basis,
- Making a commitment to attending worship not only on the Sundays of Lent but at our midweek opportunities and throughout Holy Week as well. Each of those opportunities will offer something unique to touch you in a special way.
- Studying the Gospel of Mark. By reading 4 chapters a week you can have the entire book read by the end of the season and you might just be surprised how it can touch you when read from beginning to end in new and surprising ways.
- Seeking opportunities for service, maybe even a few things you haven't tried before.
- Participating in our We Are Family Lent activities on Wednesdays here at the church beginning on the 29th, maybe taking a walk in our Meditation Walk and taking the journey through Holy Week in a new way, or maybe even inviting someone to church with you. We'll have dinner together from 6 to 6:45 with family activities to follow in the Fellowship Hall and a Conversational Worship experience in the sanctuary beginning at 7 all of which will be finished by 7:30.
- And last but not least, seeking other opportunities to share of ourselves, our time, and our possessions. We'll be introducing some special ways to do this for our families and Sunday School and Confirmation youth in particular.
However you decide to spend this Lenten Season, we sincerely hope you will find yourselves open to the leading of the Holy Spirit to a wonderful spiritual and personal journey that will deepen your walk of faith both now and in the future. And we certainly hope and pray that the journey will lead you to spend it with your brothers and sisters of faith here at Lord of Life.
Peace - Pastor Sue

African American Roots Service
Rescheduled for Saturday Feb 18 at 6pm

In the spirit of Black History Month, join us for a special worship service as we celebrate our African American Roots. We'll weave together liturgy from This Far by Faith, the Lutheran African American hymnal, gospel music and spirituals, and a special message from Pastor Louisa Groce. At the age of 81, Pastor Groce became the oldest person ever ordained by the ELCA. Now in her 90s, Pastor Groce will share her ministry with us on this special evening.

Thank You - Chili Cook-off!
|
Thanks to all who helped to support the Chili Cook-off/Super Bowl event on February 4th. We had a wonderful time with our friends from Bridge of Peace in Camden and St. Paul's in Hainesport and even managed to raise just over $500 for the St. Joseph's Homeless Café in Camden and the Family Emergency Fund here at Lord of Life in our soup pots. (For the record, the GIANTS won with
$302.75 donated vs the Patriots $197.73 for a total of $500.48 raised!) Those dedicated and talented folks were:
- Marie Lamb for organizing the day, recruiting volunteers, planning all the wonderful games,
and for keeping Pastor Sue sane.
- Denise Mozitis and the Mozitis family for donating all the ground beef for the event
(12 lbs to be exact).
- Dawn Bielec, Teri John, and Donna Roemer working with the Chili Chinchillas team
(Our winning recipe by the way!) - Pastor Giselle, Kate and Rhea Krulikowski, and Nancy Tuttle from Bridge of Peace
working with the Chili Bop-pers (Our second place team) - Karla May and Gretchen from St. Paul's, and Melissa Evans working with the Chili Bowl team
(Our third place team) - Yvette Parker and Chris (Colleen Dayton's sister) working with the Where's the Beef? team - Tina Leach, Becky Christianson and Matt Detwiler working with our cornbread crew. - Karin Krueger & Doug Hess leading up the decorating team
- All of these folks and a few more who took on the challenge of helping with all our minute
to win it games before dinner. - Jeanne Storm for being our event photographer.
And last but not least the confirmation coaches who helped with the event and for being part of the conversation after the wonder presentation of Godspell Jr. - Lauren Blum, Erin Gordon, Marie Lamb, Yvette Parker, and Paul Rogers!

It's quite a journey! Please know that you can join in anytime and everyone is always welcome!

On February 4, we had our 2nd annual Super Bowl Chili Cook-off at LOL and it was a huge success. Four teams made chili this year including a team from Bridge of Peace and St. Paul. We also had a "Corn Bread" Team and a "Decorating" Team. I want to thank everyone who was involved. Over 50 youth & adults helped make this day a success. After making chili, we played
games. Over 100 people returned to the Fellowship Hall and enjoyed some fellowship and good chili. We were then honored by the Pineland Players rendition of Godspell Jr. It was a wonderful performance. Confirmation classes resume one more time for this Confirmation year on February 26 and then conclude on March 25. The teachers this year are Yvette Parker & Erin Gordon (6th grade), Lauren Blum & Paul Rogers (7th grade), and Peter Edwardsen, Dave & Marie Lamb (8th grade). We thank the teachers for their wonderful service & witness to the Confirmation youth at Lord of Life.

Kidz Praize invites all elementary aged kiddos to join together in praising God through music and movement...and Boomwhackers! We hope to see you after Sunday School!

Holy Humor... The Lord is my Shepherd
A Sunday School teacher decided to have her young class memorize one of the most quoted passages in the Bible - Psalm 23. She gave the youngsters a month to learn the chapter.
Little Rick was excited about the task - but he just couldn't remember the Psalm. After much practice, he could barely get past the first line.
On the day that the kids were scheduled to recite Psalm 23 in front of the congregation, but Ricky was very nervous. When it was his turn, he stepped up to the microphone and said proudly, "The Lord is my Shepherd, and that's all I need to know."

OUR Mission Statement: Lord of Life Lutheran Church is a uniquely blended "family" of God's people who share their faith and life together through learning, serving and celebrating. We are committed to: Growing spiritually as we open our lives to God's will and teachings. Growing in service and stewardship as we reach out to support one another and our neighbors in need. Growing in Christian outreach as we share the "Good News" of Jesus Christ with all people in the community inviting them into a deeper fellowship with God and His people.
Celebrating the joy of being loved by God and growing together in faith is who we are.
