Brothers and Sisters...
In the last few weeks, I've become more aware than ever before of the religious diversity present in our community. Diversity among Christians in our parish has been clearly evident from the time I entered this mission field in October 1985. In fact, many of our Christian brothers and sisters welcomed us with open arms as we sought to make our own unique witness to Christ in the Tabernacle area. Our early history includes caring relationships with Tabernacle United Methodist Church (where we held mid-week Lenten services and worshipped together on Thanksgiving Eve), Saint Peter's Episcopal Church (where we held our first Service Committee meeting with Bishop Riley and offered Confirmation classes on saturday mornings), Indian Mills United Methodist Church (where we instructed children in First Holy Communion and worshipped together during Advent and New Year's Eve), Holy Eucharist Roman Catholic Church (where for several summers we were invited to use their air-conditioned chapel for sunday services of worship while they worshipped just down the hallway in the sanctuary). These ecumenical (a word taken from the Greek meaning "household" of faith) partnerships have been a source of great joy and celebration through the years and we should not take them for granted! You see, I remember the time when Protestants and Roman Catholics struggled to welcome each other within their own sanctuaries; and quite a few Protestants showed the same inhospitality among themselves. Praise God that we have grown in our ability to "agree to disagree without becoming disagreable or demeaning or worse!" But this is a new day in our community and that day involves not just cultivating healthy relationships with other Christians but allowing ourselves to be in relationship with people of other faiths as well; moving beyond ecumenical encounters to interfaith dialogue and advocacy for justice, peace and understanding. Sometimes we need to actively seek Godly reminders of this truth. For instance... Just recently I was blessed by a conversation with Rabbi Gary Gans who sought to help one of our members discern genealogical information that was recorded in Yiddish (a language combining Hebrew and local dialects) as we attended a Fellowship of Religious Leaders luncheon at Medford Leas (a Quaker community). He was thrilled to be asked to help in some way even though the recipient of that help wasn't a member of his Congregation Beth Tikvah in Marlton but a Lutheran from Tabernacle. On Martin Luther King Jr. Day numerous confirmation students and adults from Lord of Life, Saint Paul's LC in Hainesport and Bridge of Peace LC in Camden were warmly welcomed by Zahida Rahman and other members of the Muslim community at their mosque in Voorhees, New Jersey. Mrs. Rahman is the wife of the former Imam Zia Rahman who founded the mosque. How blessed all of us were to engage in Q and A about the Islamic faith, visit the Prayer Room and witness 3 Muslim women at prayer and then share a pizza luncheon together (hold the pepperoni and sausage!)

|
Awareness of religious diversity is one thing (Do you know about the Buddhist Retreat center on McKendimen Road in Shamong or have you seen the new sight for the Hindu Temple on Rte 73 in Voorhees?) but faithful conversation with people who do not believe exactly what we believe is becoming more and more critical if we are to fulfill our Christian calling!
So in this season of Epiphany when we seek to observe the birth of a king and the glory of God made evident in Jesus, let us celebrate the gift of ecumenical and interfatih relationships as the Holy Spirit seeks to bring us all closer to "the heart and mind" of God!
Your Brother in CHRIST, Pastor David Jones

Thanks from Bridge of Peace
|
Dear Friends from Lord of Life and St. Paul 's, I want to thank you for encouraging your youth and adults to participate in this service day which included accompanying us to the Islamic Center and the completion of a wonderful service project here at Bridge of Peace this afternoon. All I can say, sitting here waiting for our homeless guests to arrive tonight, is thank you, thank you, thank you...
Please ask your youth to tell the story because I am certain that they are able and willing to tell why this day was a blessing to them and us. Many youth and adults expressed great joy and amazement at the work we were able to accomplish together in God's Kingdom. The youth made soup for the Homeless Café through extremely trying situations since we have limited water and sewer on our property due to a major plumbing nightmare (ask them the story). Another group put food away in our pantry, made sure out of date food was separated, and made bags to be given out tomorrow (ask them the story). The last group cleaned the sanctuary, rearranged worship bags for children, and just seemed to be busy beavers cleaning everything from windows to the play room (ask them the story)... The disciples of Bridge of Peace thank you for working with us in making this day of service so meaningful....
Please thank all your adult leaders especially Karla and Marie for coordination and support in pulling this wonderful day off. Lastly, thank you Pastor Sue for arranging our visit to the Islamic Center. My adults and youth were fascinated but most importantly one of my members, who is often targeted by Muslims in the community with derogatory and negative comments, left today feeling reaffirmed as a person of faith with "worth and value in God's eyes." She wants me to express her thanks to you, Pastor Sue, and to all of you for helping her realize that she has gifts and helping her see herself as someone who would be accepted and loved by people she does not know... Is this not what Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. wished all people to know and believe... we all have worth and value... we are all special... we can all achieve our dreams and that our differences may only be superficial (or skin deep) at times... Thank you for helping us to make his dream come true today... Please encourage anyone who has not been to Bridge of Peace to visit... Volunteer in our new homeless café...support our ministry and pantry but mostly come and see... Thank you for coming and seeing and being part of the body of Christ as we loved and served others this day... Peace to you all... Giselle C. Coutinho, Pastor Bridge of Peace, Camden NJ

Fuller Center of the NJ Pines - News
|
January 25, 2012 - (First) Monthly News Letter to our "Faith Partners"
First we want to thank everyone for their support of the Art Show and Sale; those who made donations and those who bought a picture or two, the people who helped setup and those who provided the food and drink.
Second, we need to answer the question who/what is the Fuller Center in the NJ Pines. We are a non-profit ministry that works to eliminate poverty housing by building and repairing homes for those in need. The Fuller Center's "Greater Blessing Program" allows residents in need to have their homes restored to a decent living condition, and to keep the cost of the repairs low by utilizing volunteers from the area and by obtaining donated materials. Homeowners work with the Fuller Center to help pay for materials not donated without having to obtain loans or paying any interest payments. Any re- payments received for these projects "pay forward" for future projects.
Our latest project was the replacement of a damaged, moss laden roof just off of Rt. 206 in Tabernacle. The project came as a result of the town hall meeting that was held at Lord of Life Church in the fall. Tabernacle Township Administrator Douglas Cramer met Fuller Center Executive Director Neil Brown at the meeting and forged a relationship. Doug told Neil about the plight of this resident and the group quickly began work to get the repairs completed.
"Members of Lord of Life Church, Marlton Methodist Church and the Tabernacle boy scouts gave two days of their time completing this project," said Merle Brown. "We just let the organizations know that we needed help and the volunteer came."
Students from Seneca High School have gotten involved with the Fuller Center Programs through the Student Builders Club. The students raise funds and work on projects that they have identified in conjunction with the Fuller Center. Currently the Seneca Student Builders are installing a wheel chair ramp for a young man in Tabernacle to enable him easier access to the road to get the school bus. The students have dug out the walk and will soon work to pave the site. Seneca High School junior Christina Tennar, involved with the student builders program said, "It felt great to help others in need and when you see some of the conditions you feel good about how lucky and blessed you are."
This fall the Fuller Center is sponsoring the adult mission trip by providing an opportunity to travel to Georgia and build one new home and repair 30 others. Everyone is welcome to join in and have fun and do good works. More information will be provided as soon as it's available. Future projects will be announced in this column as soon as they are scheduled.

Knowing God's Word - Women of Faith Study Guide
Many women find reading the Scriptures to be a daunting prospect, let alone actually studying them. Questions arise. Is studying the Bible different from reading it? Why do we study God's Word? How do you study God's Word? Knowing God's Word will prepare women to approach the Bible with confidence and excitement.
Review: "This devotional helps the average Christian get further in to the Bible, to think, to reflect, and to see the application in her own life. Excellent, thought-provoking questions are the key."
Review: "It's a great study for small group or individual. I have enjoyed being able to study God's word a little closer and have good conversation with other Christian women. . . it's a great study. There's something very powerful about studying the Word."
Please contact Lisa Spector at Teachjodi97@yahoo.com or 268-2842, OR Anne-Marie Pifer at Jubilee22@hotmail.com or 268-2282 to sign up or if you have any questions. You are welcome to join any time and no worries if you can't make every meeting! Books are $10. Childcare is available.

What great conversations and explorations we have as we share in our studies! And you're invited to join in! Join us this Wednesday, Feb. 1st as we take our second look at the Islamic faith. This is a wonderful way to more fully understand our muslim neighbors and their beliefs as well as take a look at our own. It's quite a journey! Please know that you can join in anytime and everyone is always welcome!
Soup, Song, and Sacrament, Wed., Feb. 1st, 11:30

Dear Members of Lord of Life Lutheran Church,
Thank you so much for the role that you and Lord of Life has played in making this possible, you guys have been an amazing support of Walk4Water and me personally, and I really appreciate it.
I am copying my friend, Sarah Van Putten, in this email. She is going to be helping to keep churches and other members of the faith community connected to our trek while we are gone. We definitely want to stay in contact with you all and hopefully come visit again when we return to the US. Our website is getting a major overhaul in the next few weeks, and as we depart, you will be able to track our progress via our GPS check-in's, blogs, pictures, and more through our main site at: www.walking4water.org. There will also be opportunities for people to send us videos, questions, comments, and interact with us as we go, so there should be some great ways to stay in touch. Sarah will also be helping to keep you guys updated and answer any questions you have.
Thank you again so much for all your support over the past few years, you guys have been great.
Please say hi to everyone for me, and take care!

GRACE PLACE NEWS
|
Coming Soon...International Week. That's right, Grace Place is going International! We are inviting anyone (parents or congregation) to host a country or be a travel guide on Feb. 23 & 24th. The children loved this so much last year, we decided to repeat it again. Each country represented is visited by a "tour group" of children. They have their passport stamped by that country, listen to the presenter tell about the details of that country, maybe do a craft, and sample food specific to that country. Each presentation takes about fifteen to twenty minutes and there are different countries each day. The travel guides lead each group from one country to another. A good time is had by all and the children learn so much. Presenters are responsible for setting up their country and talking about it with each group. You will only present one day. So if you would like to come join us, please sign up on the Grace Place bulletin board in the Narthex. Bon jour!

Holy Humor... The Good Samaritan
A Sunday school teacher was telling her class the story of the Good Samaritan. She asked the class, "If you saw a person lying on the roadside, all wounded and bleeding, what would you do?" A thoughtful little girl broke the hushed silence, "I think I'd throw up."
