Thoughts in Print - By Pastor Sue

Dear Friends in Christ,

It's a funny thing about this time of year. Normally we think about the middle of October and the beginning of November as an opportunity to take a deep breath or two and regroup after the start of another program year in September. It's an opportunity to take time to enjoy the fall colors and the briskness of the air and to savor some small snippet of normalcy before the holiday season begins in earnest. But this year there are more than a few special things happening between now and Thanksgiving week at Lord of Life that we hope you will consider being a part of.

First of all we will be celebrating our Lutheran heritage on Reformation Day this year with a remembrance during our worship services on the weekend of October 29 and 30. And for something new this year, we are also hosting, along with our friends from St. Paul's in Hainesport and Bridge of Peace in Camden a special worship event for Confirmation age youth and their families at 6:00PM at St. Paul's. RefCon I as it is being called will be a special opportunity for celebration and learning with presentations and leadership by youth from all three congregations as well as a visit from Martin Luther himself.

On November 1st, All Saints Day, we will be holding two opportunities for worship to honor and remember those loved ones, both members and friends, who have passed on and are now at rest in the Church Triumphant with the faithful who have gone before. These services will be held at 3:00PM and at 7:30PM.

Last but not least our congregation will officially celebrate 25 years in ministry together with a special Anniversary Service on November 6th at 10:00AM at the Shawnee High School Auditorium. This will be the only service of worship that weekend so be sure to mark your calendars and be a part of this wonderful celebration. Bishop Roy Riley of the New Jersey Synod will be preaching and a luncheon will immediately follow the service so that we can enjoy a time of fellowship as well.Vicar Sue JOnes

Both Pastor Dave and I look forward to celebrating and remembering with you at any and all of these very special services.

The Christian Caring Center News

Do you ever wonder how your food donations are used at the Christian Caring Center?  To give you some idea here are the statistics for September, 2011.  The Emergency Food Program which operates out of their location at 378 Lakehurst Road in Browns Mills distributed food to 378 families who live throughout Burlington County.  These families were made up of 1,579 men, women and children.  95 of these households have a least one person working.  67 of the households are senior citizens. Of the 378 families serviced 45 were new clients to the center.  In addition to the 3 day supply of food which people are eligible to receive twice a month, the Christian Caring Center serves a hot lunch 6 days a week. 1,401 meals were served in September.  Whereas a person goes through an interviewing process in order to get the food boxes to take home, anyone who arrives at the center is welcome to the meal.  Finally on Wednesday and Friday cold meals are also taken into the surrounding woods where 50 homeless men, women and sometimes teenagers were fed in September.    hands

The importance of serving hungry people cannot be understated. However, for the volunteers and limited paid staff that help out at the center, food distribution is secondary to the primary ministry of serving all of God's people.  During the contact with folks in need, prayer is offered to each person; the day begins with a morning devotion for all who arrive early, and Christian counseling is offered individually to anyone who is open to listening. During the trips to the woods a brief prayer service is offered and people are encouraged to come to the center.  This is often difficult for some of these folks who suffer with persistent mental illnesses and addictions.

Lord of Life's ongoing support of food from the donations you place in our shopping cart in the narthex and Helping Hand's monthly sandwiches are seen as a true blessing by those serving and those receiving at the Christian Caring Center.  Thank you to our many members who give generously throughout the year.

Sign up now!  PLAID TIDINGS AT THE SURFLIGHT THEATRE

Saturday, Dec. 3rd

Plaid Tidings Surflite Theatre   Surflight Theatre is back, and we're headed there for our annual Christmas outing.  We'll be dining at the Bayberry Inn, always a special treat, then heading down the road to the theatre for a Special Holiday Edition of the hit musical Forever Plaid.  PLAID TIDINGS continues the story of the singing group whose lives were lost in an accident involving a busload of teens en route to see "The Ed Sullivan Show." Encouraged by a heavenly phone call from Rosemary Clooney, the high-spirited boys of Forever Plaid - Frankie, Sparky, Jinx and Smudge - are transported from the ethereal cosmos to stage a nostalgic holiday extravaganza for world-weary mortals on Earth. Stuffed with such "Plaid-erized" Christmas standards as "Mr. Santa," "Let It Snow" and "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," this PLAID TIDINGS is one holiday treat that is truly Heaven-sent.
The cost is $54, and we'll be carpooling from the church and Leisuretowne.  To reserve your seat, please sign up on the bulletin board by Monday, Oct. 17th and place a $20 deposit or the entire amount, $54, in Sue's box.  The balance will be due on November 11th.
