From the Desk of Pastor Dave...

Brothers and Sisters...

By the time you receive this message from me, many of you will have participated in one of our five Congregational Visioning Meetings (last one Sept 25th!).  While I enjoyed the process of sharing some personal stories and interests (Kayaking is still high on the list!)...drawing my impression of what LOL would look like if we do what we believe God wants us to do (Coloring isn't my strong suit!)...and filling in some of the gaps on our congregational time line (Who remembers when we held our first Vacation Bible School ? - yes, July 1990 at the Indian Mills School!), I was most intrigued by the "Post-it" exercize.

We were asked by the Visioning Team to use 4 different color Post-its to identify activities, items or ministries at LOL that each one of us believe should reflect where we are presently or where we need to go in the future.  Then all of us were invited to place our responses on a huge cardboard tree.

A few of my own responses might prove interesting and provocative.

   (1) Areas to grow and mature because they root us in ministry include...expand senior high youth ministry programs...add more options for small groups...continue to provide a variety of worship styles and services

   (2) Areas to nurture or fertilize something new or just budding...create a fourth service of worship that is more informal and conversational...reach out to 3rd through 5th graders and their friends with a new fellowship group...add consistent projection to our Saturday night services

   (3) Areas to fix or prune...strengthen training and guidance for assisting ministers and lectors...clean, refurbish or replace pew pads and / or pews...increase participation in music ministry for children, youth and adults

   (4) Areas to eliminate or uproot...remove "Lutheran Book of Worship" and "With One Voice" hymnals from the pews...cease using temporary signs to provide ministry information on the front of our property...address the fear of some members in our congregation of working with and welcoming people who are not like the majority of us,  i.e. inner-city folks, immigrants and people of differing sexual orientation

For over 25 years, Lord of Life has been a marvelous community of hope and healing.  God's spirit continues to lead and guide us.  Please be "in prayer" for our church as we move beyond the 25th year of our mission together.  It is clear to me that "God isn't finished with us yet...and praise the Lord never will be!"  Let us continue to...remember the past thankfully...look to the future hopefully...and live into the present boldy!

                        Your brother in CHRIST,

                           - Pastor David Jones

CALLING ALL MEN OF FAITH AT LORD OF LIFE AND FRIENDS !

Please join us this Monday, September 19, 2011 (6 PM - 7:30 PM) at LB Daniels on Stokes Road in Medford for our first Men's Fellowship Dinner of the new program year!  We gather in the front room of LBD and order off the menu (salad, sandwich or entree...it's your choice!).  This gathering is informal and conversational and will give us the opportunity to hear from one of our own members, Phyllis Worrell.  Phyllis spent almost two weeks at ground zero immediately following the events of 9/11 as a member of the NJ Task Force One Urban Search and Rescue Team.  Her story is both informational and inspirational!    Please feel free to reply to this E-mail or simply show up at dinner.  Hope to see you this Monday!

CELEBRATE LIFE !

CELEBRATION RINGERS!

Tuesday, September 20 and 27, 1:45

Come and try your hand at handbell ringing!  We're starting a new learning and playing session for experienced ringers and newcomers.  We play about 4 times a year at Lutheran Care, monthly for regular and holdiay worship services, and once at Medford Leas.  We are always looking for more hands to ring so that all of our bells are covered.  You don't have to read music but simply have a desire to bring an extra special sound in praise to God through some of our hymns and special music.  Please check in with Sue Dreisbach if you would like to know more or just join us on the 20th!

ADULT BIBLE STUDY bible

Wednesdays, 10-11:30 am

Join us for Old Testament Stories from the Back Side.   Dr. Kalas brings a new perspective to selected Old Testament stories by approaching them from the back side through a unique starting point, a creative retelling, a new lens, or the eyes of a minor or unsympathetic character.  We enjoyed exploring his perspective on the parables last year and are once again appreciating his perspective.

AMERICA'S KESWICK ANNIVERSARY LUNCHEON AND  5 PIANO CONCERT

Wednesday, Sept. 21st, 11:00

We're trekking to Whiting for a special anniversary celebration of America's Keswick Addiction Recovery and Retreat Center.  The afternoon starts with a special lunch followed by a concert featuring up to 5 pianists playing together!  It promises to be a wonderful afternoon of great music, fellowship, and reflection.  The cost is $20.  Monday, Sept. 19th is the deadline to sign up.

handsHELPING HANDS

Monday, September 26th, 1:00

All hands on deck as we prepare our monthly sandwich donation to the Christian Caring Center.  We seek to reach out to our brothers and sisters in Christ who are in need during difficult times.  You can be a part of this ministry by supplying meats and cheese, making a financial donation, delivering the sandwiches to the CCC in Browns Mills, or becoming part of the sandwich brigade that puts the sandwiches all together!

Sign up now!  PLAID TIDINGS AT THE SURFLIGHT THEATRE

Saturday, Dec. 3rd

Surflight Theatre is back, and we're headed there for our annual Christmas outing.  We'll be dining at the Bayberry Inn, always a special treat, then heading down the road to the theatre for a Special Holiday Edition of the hit musical Forever Plaid.  PLAID TIDINGS continues the story of the singing group whose lives were lost in an accident involving a busload of teens en route to see "The Ed Sullivan Show." Encouraged by a heavenly phone call from Rosemary Clooney, the high-spirited boys of Forever Plaid - Frankie, Sparky, Jinx and Smudge - are transported from the ethereal cosmos to stage a nostalgic holiday extravaganza for world-weary mortals on Earth. Stuffed with such "Plaid-erized" Christmas standards as "Mr. Santa," "Let It Snow" and "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," this PLAID TIDINGS is one holiday treat that is truly Heaven-sent.
The cost is $54, and we'll be carpooling from the church and Leisuretowne.  To reserve your seat, please sign up on the bulletin board by Sunday, Oct. 9th, and place a $20 deposit or the entire amount in Sue's box.  The balance will be due on November 11th.

Author Renee Swope shows us how to identify, overcome, and learn from our self-doubts so that we can live confidently in God's assurance, truth, and grace. Contact Lisa Spector at Teachjodi97@yahoo.com or 268-2842 to sign up or if you have any questions. Flyers are available on the bulletin board.

Thanks!

To all of our Lutheran Care angels for transporting and sharing the love of Jesus with our friends at the Lutheran Care in Moorestown!

To all who participated in our Looking Back to School PEP afternoon by bringing such delicious "school lunch" items and by sharing such wonderful memorabilia and stories about our school days.  What a joy it was to see elementary and high school pictures, yearbooks, varsity letters, report cards, and graduation programs.  What stories we discovered about Michael Landon being a classmate, playing "hose ball," getting put in the coat closet for chatting too much, playing baseball in a farmer's field with cowpies for bases, walking 4 miles to school,  putting a teacher's VW Beetle between a couple of trees, cross country skiing or boating to school, paying 5 cents for a box of crayons, and lots more!

To all who worked to make our Church Picnic such a great afternoon-for all of the food purchasing, for all who brought salads, desserts, and drinks, and for all who came out to share some wonderful fellowship!  A special thank you to Michael Masley for bringing his music, his grill, and his great grilling skills!

The yearly LOL Audit occurred in mid-September. Special thanks goes out to Ed Harding, Beth Blair,  John Welling, and team leader Rick Osman for getting this task completed. Also a big thank-you to Debbie Chromeck for gathering all of the papers that needed to be reviewed.

To all who have shared their time and ideas in the Visioning Meetings!

To all of those involved in all of our education endeavors from kids through adults!  We're off to a great start!
