Thoughts in Print - by Pastor Sue

Last Sunday, June 19th, I found myself serving as a supply pastor at Messiah Lutheran Church in Dennis Township, NJ. This is a congregation that has been in existence since 1915 (just a few years on us) and has recently relocated to a new building from their previous location in Sea Isle City. They are currently without a pastor after their most recent pastor retired.I have to admit it was a bit of an adventure as the commute was a little longer than my usual 2 minutes and I was entering new territory and meeting new people - something that believe it or not is not always easy for me.
But it was a really wonderful experience in a number of ways. First of all I was warmly welcomed by the people there. Second, it was nice to be able to support another congregation in need, and when the call came, Pastor Jones and I were more than willing to work out a way for one of us to make the trip. Last but not least, it was good experience for me to be able to preach and lead worship in a different place and with a different group of people, and in particular to get a sense of what things are like for a small (average Sunday worship attendance is 55) and yet determined congregation.
See these folks made a really difficult choice and took a risk when they sold their property near the beach and moved inland to a completely different location in the hopes of growing their ministry. And their witness taught me a couple of things. They taught me just how much most congregations have in common, no matter how big or how small. They reminded me that the Spirit is at work in, with, and among all of us and that no matter how much we have or don't have, even a pastor, wherever 2 or 3 are gathered God is truly present and at work. Last but not least they reinforced for me how fortunate I am to be a pastor, both with and for all of you at Lord of Life, but within the wider church as well.  And whether you know it or not, by calling me back in December, all of you made that possible.
In the Gospel from the 10th chapter of Matthew, Jesus speaks to his disciples about what it means to be a welcoming people, to give and receive hospitality, and to be missionaries. I was blessed to be able to experience all of those things during my Sunday away and even more blessed to be so warmly received back on my home turf this weekend. May we continue to be the welcoming and faithful people that God has called us to be, along with our brothers and sisters at places like Messiah, both now and into the future!Blessings, Pastor Sue

CELEBRATE LIFE! picnic basket

It's Dinner at the Diner time!  Come join us for another evening of great food, devotions, and wonderful fellowship.  The Red Lion Diner is the place, Wednesday, June 29th is the date, and 4:30 is the time!

Mark your calendars for our events in July!  We begin with Sounds of Joy at Lutheran Care in Moorestown on Monday, July 11th, at 1:30.  Join us as we share the love of Christ through scripture, song, and lots of shared enjoyment.  What a difference your care will make to the residents!

Our Summer Ice Cream Social will take a new twist on Thursday, July 21st, as we make our own ice cream!  We'll start with a light lunch, share ideas for future programs, and then enjoy the delightful fruits of our labor at the homemade ice cream bar!  Please let Sue know if you have an ice cream maker to share.

Then on July 27th, we're off to Late Lunch at Mastori's Diner in Bordentown.  We're hopping in between the lunch crowd and the rush hour traffic!  We'll be carpooling from the church and Leisuretowne or meet us there.  All are welcome!

The Helping Hands were up to great things once again as 270 sandwiches were made this month to share with those who are served by the Christian Caring Center in Browns Mills.  A hearty thank you to the 9 caring hearts who made the sandwiches and to all who have contributed food and financial assistance to the project.

The Son and the sun shone on the day and in our hearts as we gathered at Freedom Park for our annual PEP Picnic this past week.  The food was scrumptious, the laughter contagious, and the love for our Lord and one another infectious!  From cooking, to eating, to playing, to blowing bubbles as we sang some old summertime favorites, we had a great time!  Thank you to all of those who came and shared!

Grace Place News  grace place

The Grace Place finished their school year with a bang!  Thank you to the Kulinas for showing and telling about bees.  The children were enthralled at how hard the bees work!  The children made cards for servicemen and women and they were sent to our own Church members Tommy Riches and Matthew Cuviello.  On June 3rd the lawn got a good soaking because it was "Water Day".  The children played on a slip-n-slide, got wet with a sprinkler and three pools.  They blew bubbles and made wonderful designs with chalk on the sidewalk.  And then our last day came with a bounce house and a family style picnic.  There was food a plenty and lots of fellowship with parents and children.  There is a strange rumor that Ms. Donna was in the bounce house.  Can you believe it???  We can't believe another year is over! Many thanks to the teachers of Grace Place.  They do a wonderful job.  When we open in September we will be celebrating five years already!  God certainly has blessed us!

If you know of anyone looking for a preschool, please have them contact the church for information.

Holy Humor:

A preacher was completing a temperance sermon: with great expression he said, "If I had all the beer in the world, I'd take it and throw it into the river." With even greater emphasis he said, "And if I had all the wine in the world, I'd take it and throw it into the river."

And then finally, he said, "And if I had all the whiskey in the world,
I'd take it and throw it into the river."

He sat down. The song leader then stood very cautiously and announced with a smile, "For our closing song, let us sing Hymn # 365: "Shall We Gather at the River."
