President's Corner

Happy Advent to all members of the Congregation. As we prepare for the coming of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, I hope this season of Advent finds you excited in anticipation of the birth of a savior.

Over the weekend the Congregation of Lord of Life overwhelmingly voted to call Sue Jones as our second Pastor. This is an exciting time for our church and I would personally like to welcome Sue to our staff. I would also like to thank all the members of the Congregation who took the time to come out and vote this weekend.

Sue Jones brings her unique and vibrant personality to us and it bodes well for the future of Lord of Life. She is thrilled to be coming to us as a full time Pastor and has many wonderful ideas to help us all grow in faith.

As president of the Congregation I am asking all of us to suScott Glossnerpport Sue in any way we can with our faith, our participation, and our sharing.

Hope to see you all through the Advent season and into Christmas.

Yours in Christ,

     Scott Glossner

CHRISTIAN CARING CENTER THANKS YOU!

GIVING TREE
The tags are gone and the packages piling up under the tree as we once again reach out with God's love to bring smiles to the children in families helped by the Christian Caring Center.  We are trying to provide 300 Christmas gifts for that blessed celebration.  Please place your gifts unwrapped under the Giving Tree with the tag attached.  The gifts will be taken to the Caring Center on Sunday, Dec. 12th.  Thank you for sharing your hearts and resources.

Christian Caring Center

The Christian Caring Center now has two sites for donations.  Food donations are still being taken at their original location on Lakehurst Rd. in Browns Mills.  All other donations are being collected at their new thrift store, The Village Thrift Shop, located at 87 Hanover Street in Pemberton.  The hours are Monday through Friday from 10-7 and on Saturday from 10-4.  The phone number for The Village Thrift Shop is 609-894-4500.

Furniture is accepted on a limited basis due to space restraints.  It is best to call with your questions about any large item you might want to donate.  When calling ask for the manager John or Marion, the board member who oversees the operation.

It is an exciting time of growth for the Christian Caring Center and they continue to be grateful for the support they receive from our congregation.

Four Books to Place in the Hands of Children (adults too!)

Greetings!  Are you looking for books to give as a gift for a child? How about a book which conveys not only a great story, but also has a solid stewardship message? You might even find them a helpful resource to convey the message to adults.

The Lorax - The Lorax is a colorful and imaginative tale that cautions the reader of the pitfalls of the societal "bigger is better" attitude. The primary message of this book can be summed up in the cautionary words of the Lorax "UNLESS someone like you; cares a whole awful lot; nothing is going to get better; It's not."
These words, which haunt the Once-ler, will also continue to haunt and challenge any careful reader. The Lorax cleverly illustrates the importance of communal responsibility and environmental stewardship as well as the impact, for better or for worse, that one individual can have on the world.

The Selfish Giant - This heart-warming fairy tale illustrates the importance of sharing one's resources and helping those less fortunate. While the moral of the story is clear, this moral may not translate well to children reading the story because they may associate more with the children in the story than the selfish giant. It may be helpful to emphasize the roles of both the child and the giant in the story when reading the story to children. This will engage the children to see themselves in either character.

Because Nothing Looks Like God - This book is a great stewardship tool for younger children. The last part emphasizes how the people in a community care for one another and how God can use each person to do God's work on earth. This last section specifically asks the child what he/she can do for another person to share his/her gifts, talents and time. This book can open up conversations with children concerning stewardship and that sharing what we have includes everything, not just our money.  This more holistic way of talking about stewardship allows children to feel as if they are part of God's work and the community of faith right from the beginning, not just when they have monetary gifts.

In God's Hands - This is a great resource to teach children how God performs miracles everyday through both our hands and the hands of our neighbors. This book teaches children that "your hands are God's hands" and opens up conversation with children about how God can use their possessions, gifts and talents to serve their neighbor.

The Fuller Center for Housing in the New Jersey Pines and Lord of Life Lutheran Church are traveling to Plaquemines Parish Louisiana to work for the Fuller Center Disaster Rebuilders again this year.  Yes, 6 years after the devastation of hurricane Katrina homes are still desperately needed to replace the ones destroyed on that now historic day.

The ground travel, room and board cost will run about $ 200.00 per person.  Making the total cost of $460.00 per person for the trip excluding the balance of dinners.  Breakfast, bag lunch are included Monday - Friday, Dinner is included Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.

The housing is set up with 4 to a room (bunks) with a full bathroom in each room, volunteers are expected to bring their own bedding, pillows and towels.   FCHDR is working on new construction at this site, all houses are on piling and are 8' to 10' off the ground.  The trip is limited to 48 due to housing limitations, we are asking that you respond by 12/29/10.   Housing Location at the Port Sulphur Baptist Church, 27080 Highway 23, Port Sulphur, LA 70083
