Monthly memory verse: "And He told them, 'Go into all the world and preach the Good News to everyone.'" Mark 16:15 - - - - - - - - - - Feb 17 - Ash Wednesday starts forty days (not counting Sundays) of Lent when
we as Christians remember our sinfulness, repent, ask God's forgiveness,
and recognize that God's forgiveness comes at an infinite price -- the
death of Christ on the cross on our behalf. It is not meant as a time
of false humility or prideful self-sacrifice. It reminds us that our
sin separates us from God, who "demonstrates His own love toward us, in
that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us" (Rom. 5:8).

"Ask Vicar Sue"
The snow is falling like crazy
outside and I am comfortably ensconced in my recliner with my laptop, so what is
there to do but write another installment of "Ask Vicar Sue".
Recently someone suggested that I should take up the subject of Pride
from a Christian perspective. Good idea! The word shows up a total of 74 times
in the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible and almost always has a
negative connotation. For example, Proverbs 16:18 tells us that "Pride goes
before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall." Pride is also often
mentioned in a way that contrasts it with humility, almost as if the two were
polar opposites. The problem with pride from a Christian perspective is
twofold. First, we have a tendency to want to credit ourselves with our talents
and treasure rather than appreciating them as gifts from God given to us for
the good of ourselves and others. Second, it is almost impossible for us to
have pride in something without at the same time comparing ourselves to others
in the process. As D.L. Moody once said - "God sends no one away empty
except those who are full of themselves." Blessings - Vicar Sue

Care Partner's Ministry Information
The Care Partners Ministry has started a support group for LOL members and friends in the community
who would like support during times of loss. Reverend Nancy Truscott, a
chaplain at Vitas Innovative Hospice Care, assists with this new loss
group. We are excited to welcome Nancy as she brings her valuable
experience to our new initiative. Some of our members are also assisting in facilitating the group. We encourage all who find themselves dealing with the difficulties which we
often experience when we lose meaningful people or things in our lives to join
us on the first Tuesday of each month at 7pm.
Care Partners' mission is to reach out to our family in Christ during life's
challenging times so that no one need face these times alone . |
Gifted by God: my talents Ever wish you were gifted with the skills and
abilities so evident in others? Even
though we're all created in God's image (Gen. 1:27) we have differing sets of
talents (skills, abilities, aptitudes).
Some of us may feel like the one talented servant in the parable of the
talents (Matt. 25:14-30): God didn't give me much to work with - so what's the
use? But God doesn't measure by
another's standard, rather He expects each person to use the abilities that God
gave - to make a difference in His kingdom (Luke 12:48b).
