eNews from Lord of Life 01-November-2009
Lord of Life Lutheran Church, Tabernacle NJ |
Since the early centuries of the church the liturgical calendar has reserved one day to honor, collectively, all the saints; both those officially recognized and those known only to God. This service remembers all those who
have died in faith or been baptized during the past year. |
"Give Thanks to the Lord; for He is good! His faithful love endures forever." Psalm 107:1

The Pony Express is off and running!
Coming soon to your home! Nov 1st is the kickoff weekend for the Lord of Life "Pony Express". The saddlebag, containing the Estimate of Sharing Card will be delivered to your home by a Route Rider (a fellow church member who lives near
you). After you have filled in this card, you just seal it in the small envelope,
place it back into the "saddlebag", and then relay to another church member on your neighborhood route. Saddle up, partner!
Keep that Trail Bag moving! If you have any problems,
please contact your Trail Boss.

Ask Vicar Sue!
Greetings and welcome to another installment of Ask
Vicar Sue. Last time out we discussed the origins of the clerical
collar. This time I thought it might be a good idea to give some mention as to
why some clergy wear them and others may not. Many protestant clergy choose not
to wear the collar as a way of avoiding any possible implication that clergy
are somehow more "special" than any other believer; which is a
valid argument. In my experience, wearing the collar has evoked both positive
and negative responses, but far more often than not it has served as an open
invitation for people to approach me, and especially people in need, and I have
often found myself praying for, and witnessing to, people in check-out lines,
office building lobbies, and restaurants. If I had not been wearing the collar
I would have missed those opportunities. The collar then is a vivid reminder to
me and to those around me of my call to service and to witness to the Gospel.
Guess I'll keep wearing it! Jesus's
Blessings - Vicar Sue

It's God, Not the Economy! The Rev Paul Sadler, Sr., pastor of Mt. Zion Congregational, UCC, Cleveland, made a yet-echoing sermon statement to his church several years ago. He took an empty bucket and dropped two pennies in it. Those two pennies made a lot of noise that day - not unlike the two fish and loaves in the gospel that fed the multitude. Rev. Sadler did this to illustrate the noise made by a lone woman who gave just two coins, but that was all she had. He underscored how the noise of that stewardship was noticed by Jesus in the midst of the parade of givers - she gave all she had. While others calculated due to the economy, she gave all she had! Was her offering market or faith-driven? Did she believe that God was broke, too? God said "Let there be light" to a formless and void earth. Chaos became order from God's three-word sermon, "Let there be!" Let there be faith that God can and will supply our needs according to God's riches in glory. Let us break the silence on stewardship! It's God, not the economy! - Thanks to Rev. Ozzie Smith, Jr. - Covenant UCC, South Holland, Illinois
