Update on the Pony Express
Word is getting around that the exciting PONY EXPRESS is coming to Lord of Life
this November! Have you heard that we are "hiring on" every able-bodied member to
take a turn as a Route Rider in the big Pony Express RUN that gets underway on
the weekend of Nov 1?
Already, we have lined up leaders ("trail bosses") for the unique program that we are using for
this year's Lord of Life Fall Stewardship Emphasis. The Pony Express Plan has been acclaimed enthusiastically in hundreds of
churches where it has been used. The program involves everyone. It is fun to
participate. The program offers the challenge of a deeper level of commitment
to Christian stewardship. The Pony Express approach to stewardship invites members to fill in a card on
which they estimate the amount the member family will contribute to the church
during the year 2010. The Estimate of Sharing Card will be delivered to your home in a
"saddlebag" by a Route Rider (a fellow church member who lives near
you). After you have filled in this card, you will seal it in an envelope,
place it back into the "saddlebag", and then relay the
"saddlebag" to another church member on your neighborhood route. It's
that simple to serve as a Route Rider in the Pony Express Run. Hire on, partner!

Thanksgiving Meal Project
Do
you have a heart for our Thanksgiving Meal Project for the clients of
the Christian Caring Center? Do you have about 3 hours to spare over the
next couple of weeks? We are looking for someone to work alongside Sue
Dreisbach on this project. Please check in with her at the church, by
email, or phone. This is a simple project that provides big results in
serving our neighbors.

Thank You!
Special thanks to Tom and Linda Hall for donating materials and installing outside lights at the shed - this will make working around the church much easier (and safer!)...
Thank
you to all who were involved in our recent Taize' service.
Our thanks to all of our Lutheran Care angels who share with the residents in
the joy of God's love and care.
Thank you Helping Hands for making sandwiches
for the clients of the Christian Caring Center and all those who have been
donating food items for their pantry. All of these items are distributed
in their meal programs, their food bag donations, and their trips into the
woods, shelters, and wherever the homeless can be found. The Center is experiencing a 40% increase in food requests over the last few months, so your help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks to those helping with the kickoff of our fall program, and to those who make it so wonderful each year!

 Walk in the Park!
New
Program! It
was a beautiful morning with wonderful fellowship as we thoroughly enjoyed our
first Walk in the Park at Woodford Cedar Run Wildlife Refuge.
The nature center was intriguing, the rescued animal sanctuary fascinating, and
the walk around the lake beautiful. Join us this month as we travel to Smithville
Park in Mount Holly on Monday, Oct. 19th, at 10. Walk just on
the boardwalk through the lake or stretch your legs further on one of the
trails. You're welcome to bring a bag lunch as well if you'd like to top
off the morning with a snack.

Ask Vicar Sue
Greetings and welcome to the second installment of "Ask
Vicar Sue". Our topic for today is the Clerical Collar. Several of
you have asked me about the significance and origin of the clerical collar worn
by members of the clergy. The tradition of clergy wearing distinctive clothing
goes back to the middle ages. Over the years black became the color of choice
for basic garb because of the contrast with vestments worn to celebrate
worship. The clerical collar itself as a standard for clergy didn't appear in
the form we know it now until the mid 1800's. As you may have noticed there are
a couple of different varieties. Pastor and I generally where a tab collar
(affectionately known in some circles as "the chicklet"). It is
sometimes also called the "Roman collar" because it is the type most often worn
by Catholic Priests. The other common type is a neckband collar (aka "the
dog collar"). To be continued... Blessings - Vicar Sue

Trip to Haiti
Again a group will be going to Haiti to help the people there with medical and other needs. The trip is $600 plus airfare - please contact Penny Miller if interested. Penny is also coordinating making skirts for women of Haiti (over 100 so far!) and looking for help sewing or donations of 2.5 yards of washable fabric. Also interested in anyone who sells material wholesale. Haitian women never get anything new so this gift will not only help them materially but spiritually also. Please help Penny with this wonderful effort to help the Christian women of Haiti! |
