Blessed to be a Blessing!
At the end of July we received a letter from Bishop Riley of the New Jersey Synod.  He quoted the New Orleans Times-Picayune newspaper as it reflected on this summer's national ELCA Youth Gathering.  "A tide of teenagers that began to lap at New Orleans Tuesday will run at full flood today, as 37,000 Lutheran youths and their escorts converge to study, listen and volunteer on ground they were told was made sacred by the sufferings induced by Hurricane Katrina. Convention industry leaders said the gathering of the ELCA will be the largest New Orleans convention of any kind since Hurricane Katrina.  It has filled more than 70 hotels to capacity and engaged the services of 300 busses to shuttle young volunteers to service projects all over metro New Orleans.  Those projects include work at 82 schools, 21 community centers, 13 churches and 7 public parks.  Youngsters will help build homes, read to children in Jefferson Parish schools' summer programs  and donate a school supply kit for every New Orleans student from kindergaten to third grade (13,500 students!).  All we can say is, bless y'all."
