Blessed to be a Blessing!

In our life together as a congregation, we have had the opportunity to partner with the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia on many occasions.  This school has been part of our faith tradition since 1867 and is a training ground for ministers of the gospel; both ordained pastors and lay ministers.  Six of these men and women have worked with us in field education and one was our vicar for a year (Pastor Linda Wood who is now the pastor at Zion Lutheran Church in Riverside, N. J.).  Once again we have been asked to be an internship site.  This time we will work in co-operation with Saint Paul's LC in Hainesport and Lutheran Care in Moorestown sharing responsibility for the education and ministry of Vicar Sue Jones.  Sue's work among us will graciously remind us that God constantly calls the Church into new relationships so that we might be "Blessed to be a Blessing!"

7 Spiritual Practices: A Faithful Steward's Guide #7
Over the past few weeks we discussed things to consider as we go through challenging times.  This week is the last installment:
"A Financial Downturn Can Be a Spiritual Upturn".

where your heart is "As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, continue to live your lives in Him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving." (Colossians 2:6-7)

What does it mean to be rooted in Christ? Imagine a house plant with each leaf and flower receiving the nourishment it needs through the root system, up the stalk, and out to the very tips of the plant. So, too, every part of our lives can be nourished by Christ; bringing peace and calm in the midst of anxiety, wisdom to handle financial and other pressures, and comfort in times of burden, grief, and sorrow.

And then, with an almost throw-away line, Paul adds that we are to be "abounding in thanksgiving." We return to where we started these reflections - combating a culture that does not encourage thankfulness, indeed, which spends billions of dollars every year to encourage discontentment. Recessions are difficult times, and there is pain and hardship for many, but we can find nourishment and contentment by trusting God's faithfulness. With God's leading, we can come out stronger, as individuals and as a society.

Pause for Reflection: How might tough times bring you closer to God? Spend some time in prayer, turning your thoughts to God. In what areas of your life do you need God's nourishment?

Final Action: Look back over these seven practices. Make a note of what you have decided to do differently. Set aside time each day in prayer to be led to wise choices and right actions.

Meet Vicar Sue Jones!
first communionI was born in 1960 near Schenectady, NY and also lived in South Carolina for several years before moving to New Jersey in 1994. Since moving to the this area I have been an active member of St. Paul's in Hainesport. I am currently living in the "Mission House" at St. Paul's with my 9 year old Labrador Retriever Bailey while I complete seminary. In my free time I enjoy spending time with friends and family as well as finding time to be out of doors hiking and canoeing or doing projects at home.
I am a life-long Lutheran and have been active in many areas of ministry and leadership in the church since my youth. In May of this year I resigned my position with Merck and Co., Inc. and ended a successful first career as an Engineer/Project Manager in order to complete my studies at the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Philadelphia. My field education experiences while in seminary have included working with the Lutheran Office of Governmental Ministry in Trenton, with Bridge of Peace Community Church in Camden, and as a Chaplain at Cooper University Hospital in Camden.
