Pomegranate

The pomegranate is an extraordinary fruit, steeped in history: the number of seeds (roughly 613) found in a single fruit were said by ancient scholars to correspond to the 613 commands of the Hebrew Torah. Now, renowned herbalist James Duke, a former ecologist with the USDA, has published (in the April, 2008 issue of Alternative & Complementary Therapies) an exhaustive review of the scientific literature on the pomegranate. His conclusion: it is "one of the most promising of health foods" with "a dozen known anti-inflammatory phytochemicals and some 3 dozen antioxidants." Duke found studies that suggest pomegranate fruit and/or juice may help prevent or alleviate:

  1. Heart disease and atherosclerosis
  2. High cholesterol
  3. Prostate cancer
  4. Alzheimer's disease

If you have access to inexpensive pomegranates (as many in the southern U.S. do; the trees grow prolifically with little tending) or can afford the delicious but rather expensive juices now on the market, by all means indulge. And if you can't, remember that deep-colored fruits such as cherries, blueberries and raspberries, and deep-colored vegetables, all offer similar benefits. Enjoy!*

Chocolate: a Heart Healthy Food?

chocolatestrawberry

That's right, chocolate!  Although it seems that we've only recently discovered the positive affects of the cacao seed, the Ancient Mayans were the first to discover this euphoric treat and all its power over 1,500 years ago.

Naturally grown in the South American rainforest, the Mayans would harvest and ferment the seeds of the football sized pods, grind them, add water, chile peppers, and cornmeal and drink as a bitter frothy beverage.  When the Mayan civilization declined and the Aztecs began to dominate, cacao seeds became the major trade commodity as they could not grow the tree themselves in their Mexican climate.  Cacao then shifted from a staple daily food of the masses to a delicacy only reserved for the privileged.

The Aztecs thought cacao to be a gift from the god Quetzalcoatl and an aphrodisiac, and for that purpose the drink was banned to women.  Soldiers would consume it before battle, priests would giver offerings of it to the gods, and Montezuma is rumored to have consumed 50 cups of it a day, and especially before entering his harem.

chocolatebarsToday, we know how chocolate works.  Only about 2 oz daily of dark chocolate with a minimum 70% cacao solid is beneficial to health.  It provides protection against heart disease, high blood pressure, and many other health hazards as well as essential trace elements, antioxidants, and nutrients such as iron, calcium and potassium, magnesium, and vitamins A, B1, C, D, and E.  Chocolate may block oxidation of LDL cholesterol, contains phenylthylamine which reduces depression and stimulates euphoria, and boosts serotonin levels which may help alleviate premenstrual syndrome. Ounce per ounce, chocolate has more antioxidants than fruits, vegetables, tea and wine. In fact, 1.5 ounces of dark chocolate packs as many antioxidants as five ounces of red wine.

*Just remember when you decide to curl up with your favorite chocolate to put quality at the top of your list.  I highly recommend the brands, Equal Exchange, Green & Black, or Gnosis Chocolate, a raw chocolate company owned by fellow Integrative Nutrition alumnus, Vanessa Barg.  All of these company's organic ingredients and fair trade practices not only make it good for the body but for the world as well.  Suggested Valentine's movie pick to watch with your chocolate dessert of choice is Como Agua para Chocolate (Like Water for Chocolate).  It's magnificent writing adapted from the book of the same name, and the perfect romantic choice and one of my favorite movies of all time!

February 2011

-Forgiveness, Pomegranates,

Chocolate & Your Heart-

The Green Life Health has gone Red!

Since February is Heart Health month, I always dedicate this newsletter to my grandfather Edward Kell.  He was my best friend, and in October 2001 he passed away of degenerative heart disease.

Although I do little things each day to keep his memory alive, the most important thing I believe I can do is educate and guide my friends, family, clients, readers, and followers to make the smartest food & lifestyle choices for their heart.  That is, if their Heart is open to it.

We, at The Green Life Health, know that the current trend of blaming genetics is crippling our society.

To some patients and doctors, it may seem easier to just accept that there is nothing you can do other than become dependent on a drug, if a disease "runs in the family".

Well, I'm going to be blunt with you today because I want to save your or one of your loved ones' life: that paradigm of thinking is a cop out and a lie.

You do not have to be a slave to your genetics & you do not have to be another statistic in the current, failing system.

Lifestyle trumps genetics every time....IF and only IF you learn the truth about nutrition and health and what is right for your unique body.

A healthy life can be delicious, fulfilling, and mind-blowingly superior to the life you lead now.  But you'll never find that out unless you open your Heart to the information available to you.

Unfortunately, western medicine is drowning in their ocean of status quo & teaching our M.D.'s pharmacology, but next to nothing about nutrition and prevention.

That's what health counselors are here for, and THIS month I offer some unbiased information reagarding what's healthy for your heart; physically & emotionally.

Make sure you read the article on FORGIVENESS, Pomegranates, Chocolate, and all the free Valentine's gifts & events we have for you this month!  Your heart depends on it!

Enjoy, and remember to show Love by forwarding this to someone you care for.

Sincerely,
Laura Wald CHC

Forgiveness
is it the key to a healthy heart?
forgiving hands
"The weak can never forgive.
Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong."

I have to honestly say my journey to discover the true meaning of this word, Forgive, and aptly apply it to my life, began about four and a half years ago.  But I don't have to make this a personal story to make my point really, because everyone can pinpoint a person or people in their life with whom they are at odds.  Okay, "at odds" may be sugar-coating it a bit, so what I really want to say is:  I don't care who you are, there is someone in your life that can be considered an enemy.  Whether that person knows it or not, they have had, and may still have, an extreme impact on your life due to either a real or perceived wrong they've done to you.

Phew!  That said, now here comes the concept that was thrown at me when I went back to school for health counseling and, simplistic as it may seem, it kind of rocked my world:  In order for you to be truly happy and successful you must be right with yourself, and to be truly right with yourself you must be right with the people in your life.  That translates to me as...Forgiveness.  Making things right, however you decide to do it, with that person or people that have done you wrong, brought you sorrow, or just plain (in your eyes at least) exist to make you miserable, is key to your ultimate happiness.

Now, I used to be a person who equated forgiveness with forgetting.  This misconception I have come to observe is one shared by many.  This misconception, and the need to reverse it, is something I cannot press upon you enough.  The act of forgiveness is for YOU more than it is for them, and it does not mean you need to forget what happened.  The longer you hold onto the thought of pain associated with another person, though, is the longer you hold yourself back from the kind of emotional wholeness you need to be free.  Free from sadness, free from self sabotage, and even free from many illnesses.

In my culture, though, there is a belief that between two people, in order to complete the act of forgiving the one who wronged must seek forgiveness.  That is not to say that the wronged can keep dragging along their weighted baggage, not letting go just because someone hasn't offered to carry it for them.  I make this point, because in reality there will be many situations where the person who SHOULD ask, will NEVER ask for forgiveness.  Or, if you try to make things right you may not succeed.  It's just the way it is.

YET, every day that I have the pleasure of sitting across from a client, relationships are inevitably a huge part of the conversation regarding health & wellness.  Whether it be healthy or not so healthy relationships, we often hold onto certain things that are detrimental in the process of reaching optimal health and happiness.

Why do I bring this up now?  Well, the New Year usually brings about a renewed spirit to try again.  To get things right this time around.  To care for yourself a little bit better than you did the year before, and, of course to rid our lives of the stress that consumed us in the year before.

Also, being Heart Health month, it's important to realize the stress that can build from not being able to let go, which can have a profound emotional and eventual physical effect on your heart.

But this desire for "out with the old, and in with the new" can never work if we don't MAKE ROOM for the new.  If you're holding onto the baggage, or in other words if you can't cleanse by Forgiving, you will never achieve the health and happiness you so desperately long for.

It's a tough one I admit, and I'll also be the first to say that I am not there yet.  We, as human beings, build walls around us for many reasons.  Most of which are protective ones in order to shield us from pain.  What I don't think we realize enough, though, is that the very act of putting up those boundaries may be causing us more pain than living without them.  In other words, holding onto the past will hold you back from your future.

But just because this may happen are you going to allow that person to keep wronging you by holding onto it?  You may not be able to stop, open that suitcase and dump it ALL out, but you sure can lighten the load for yourself.  In fact, you must lighten the load, because after all, you are the only person that is in control of your life.

So, I can't help coming to my own conclusion about the word "Forgive".  Reverse the syllables and it becomes "give for".  Give FOR your Self and give OF your Self.  It just may open up the door that has kept you from the success you've wanted.  It may lead you to forming that relationship you want.  Or it may clear that path to a healthy body and heart.  Or it may just simply... lighten the load.

*Ask yourself this question:  Is your heart open and ready to receive the good in yourself and the good in others (Are your Primary Foods in balance)?  Are you feeding your heart with all the foods it needs to keep pumping the blood that feeds every organ in your body (Are you getting the right Secondary Food)?  Are you working with a knowledgeable health counselor who can help you balance both Primary Foods and Secondary Foods so you can live the life you were meant to live?

Battling the Big 3

February 17, 2011

133 Louis St
Newington, CT 06111

*options for long distance guests as well, see below

Diabetes. Heart Disease. Obesity.

These are the top 3 ravagers of our health today.

Chances are you or someone you know has been affected directly by one or more of these diseases.

The unfortunate reality is that most conventional medical practitioners today are not equipped to teach their patients what they need to do to properly prevent or reverse these diseases in a healthy and safe way without the use of pharmaceuticals.

Nutrition is simply not part of the traditional medical education.

At this rate the Big 3 show no sign of stopping or slowing down UNLESS you learn the tools to properly care for your body and well-being.

DON'T BE ANOTHER STATISTIC IN THE CURRENT SYSTEM!

Dr. Steve Judson will educate us on the effects that pressure on the spine can have on The Big 3 and Laura Wald CHC, will share some of the top food & lifestyle choices that aren't being talked about enough and that could save your life.

Join us for this very important event and bring someone you LOVE.

It's time for this country to take back their health! You don't have to be a slave to your genetics, because lifestyle trumps them every time.
