The Cyclic Nature of the Body
This article is so extensive, I'm Body Cyclesgoing to present it to you in two parts. The first part will show you that every process in the body is cyclic. Energy flows through our bodies with innate, natural rhythms. Digestion, detoxification, hormonal balance, and absorption of nutrients are individually dominant activities that take place at specific times. If we don't live according to these cycles, we create imbalances, resulting in disease.

The second article which you will receive later will describe how important it is to monitor your pH, both saliva and urine. The pH of your saliva tells you what is occurring in your blood, basically, what your body is retaining, minerals and toxins being examples. Your urinary pH is indicative of your mineral supply and shows whether you're in a degenerative state (catabolic) or in a regenerative, building and renewing of tissue state (anabolic). Urine also shows what the body is trying to eliminate.

Much more information is given by understanding the importance of monitoring your pH, but it will be covered in the next article. Understand that the cycles we will be describing and the pH have to be in sync or illness will present itself.

For example, if your digestive fluids do not have a normal and specific pH, your enzymes cannot function normally, and your digestive cycle will be disturbed. This can result in ulcers, allergies, every intestinal illness you can imagine, and, of course, vitamin, mineral, and hormonal deficiencies. Our metabolism is one interdependent cyclic energy machine which controls every metabolic function.

Seasons of the Body
"To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heavens."
King James translation of Solomon's Ecclesiastes.

Understanding the body cycles is fundamental to one's health. We must live our lives in accordance with our innate cyclic rhythms. These rhythms are the LAWS of Nature. And they are the same for all of us. Because they are the same, it makes it basic and easy for us to control our lives, health, and environment.

The ancient Chinese understood this profound knowledge since the beginning of time. We need to understand there is an order in the stars, in the earth's rotation around the sun, birth and maturation. Another example - a woman's menstruation comes every 28 days.

  Organ Clock
Looking at our 24 hour organ clock, there are three eight-hour cycles. The general rule is eating when and what when the time is right. Also, remember, there is no single diet; we all have different nutritional needs because of lifestyles, sickness, climate, age, activity level, pregnancy and lactation.

8-Hour Cycles:

7 a.m. - 3 p.m. - High energy in digestive organs.
            Eat and digest
            Low stress proteins
3 p.m. - 11 p.m. - Body uses nutrients.
            Building process.
            Exercise
3 p.m. - 7 a.m. - Body detoxifies.
Never eat before bedtime. This breaks cycles and the body retains wastes.

In the morning, we concentrate on low stress proteins, mixed with vegetables and a little oil. This method will stabilize blood sugar and will make amino acids, vitamins, and minerals available for the 3 p.m. - 11 p.m. building process. It's also compatible with the body's acid pH in the morning.

Some people can tolerate fruit in the morning, but not over an extended period of time. It causes blood sugar to spike and drop dramatically, causing fatigue and low blood sugar. This weakens the adrenals and causes exhaustion. Fruits also cause an increase in alkalinity. They digest rapidly, inhibit production of acid, and cause a rapid pH swing. (That's the great thing about Juice Plus+®, is that you get all the nutrients in fruits, but not the carbohydrates, which cause all the problems.)

Complex carbohydrates are mildly acidic and support the body to swing to alkalinity later on in the day. But sometimes there is a problem with them; they are sedative foods and can cause the brain's release of serotonin, which puts us to sleep or causes tiredness. Some people can tolerate this, but not forever. Adding vegetables to carbohydrates will help prevent this.

Fruits and starchy foods should be consumed later in the day during the second cycle. This cycle is more alkaline and already has the earlier proteins digested, available in the blood for use. This makes sense; just because you eat a food doesn't mean it's going to be available right away. And, never eat a large amount of carbohydrates at one meal or you will definitely create high and then low blood sugar problems.

Always eat vegetables with protein meals. They neutralize protein acids, detoxify, and have fiber to transport wastes out of the body before they putrefy in the colon. Eating large amounts of high- stress proteins like meat, pork, chicken, and milk without vegetables acidifies the body, creating acid throughout the day, upsetting the pH and hormonal cycle. Also, this can be a major contributing factor to colon and prostate cancers.

Low stress protein foods are soaked seeds and nuts. Soak for at least four to eight hours. Eggs cooked at low temperature, miso, feta cheese, dulse and sea vegetables, chlorella, sesame tahini, tofu, sunflower sprouts, and tempeh are also low stress proteins. Wild rice, cooked slowly, is another. Cooked grains turn into rapidly absorbed carbohydrate foods when overcooked. Sprouting them is better.

An excellent way of solving some of these problems is to take extra multiple enzymes with your meals. Another way is to take powdered meals, replacement drinks, instead of eating. I always add a scoop of powdered green seaweeds and vegetable concentrate to these drinks. Make sure there is enough fiber in them (at least 10-20 grams).

Summing Up the Rules
First Cycle - 7 a.m. - 3 p.m.

Good fibers are pectin, flax, guar gum, and psyllium husks. Foods like cabbage, Brussels sprouts, asparagus, and broccoli are excellent. They all help regulate blood sugar and bind with excess cholesterol and remove it from the body. If you're using beans, remember, when they're cooked and overheated, their nutritional value is different than when they are raw. Overcooked beans release their protein and they become carbohydrate-dominant, instead of protein-dominant. The protein gets denatured from overcooking. Soak them first; sprout them, and slow cook them. I, personally, do not use them. It's all about using high- or low-stress foods and eating them at the right time.

Second Cycle - 3 p.m. - 11 p.m.

Here, you'll see the chart that shows us that the kidneys, bladder, circulation, and triple burner (adrenals and hormones) are most active. All your proteins, vitamins, and minerals are circulating in the body along with your hormones ready for the body to utilize them. It's a good time to exercise. Your minerals and proteins are buffering the acids and your body is more alkaline. It's a good time to eat your fruits and complex carbohydrates. You're supplying energy along with circulating proteins which have been processed by your liver. This will stabilize blood sugar and insulin output. Take enzymes with your meals. See my new The Power of Nutrition with Enzymes book (April, 2010). If you eat sweets or too much fruit in the morning, it can inhibit this natural cycle. When you read my next article on pH, you'll learn how to maintain these natural cycles. If they're out of balance, you'll know what to do to re-establish your cycles.

Third Cycle - 11 p.m. - 7 a.m.

This is time to rest; the body detoxifies and cleanses bodily wastes. This is why you never want to eat late at night or you will retain bodily waste and interfere with the body's natural cycles. It is a regenerative, alkaline cycle if all is right. Proteins eaten late in the day are not properly digested or completely metabolized and accumulate in the blood and lymph system. TOXIC OVERLOAD! The lymphatic system transports proteins and eliminates wastes. Eating proteins late in the day causes congestion and upsets sleeping patterns. Your gallbladder, liver, and lungs are active during sleep cycles, cleansing the body, preparing you for the next day. Proteins eaten early in the day are released and used for building tissues and hormones. Therefore, your lymphatic system is active during the day as it should be.

Coordinating Foods, Supplements, and Hormones
These are some hints on how to stay healthy. What good is it to take supplements, foods, and hormones during the wrong cycles? Good things at the wrong time can be just as bad as wrong foods that are eaten. Good proteins eaten too late in the day can cause congestion and acidity. Organic fruits eaten too early, for some, can cause adrenal exhaustion.

For more details, see my book ProMetabolics: Your Personal Guide to Transformational Health and Healing on pH and the monitoring system.

Next month I'll be covering monitoring your body cycles in relation to your pH.
