YMCA RECEIVES REBATE FOR ENERGY EFFICIENT BUILDING
The YMCA of Greater Nashua has received a very welcome birthday present from National Grid. The Y, which just celebrated its first anniversary on Stadium Drive in Nashua, has received a major grant as part of the National Grid Gas Efficiency Program offered through National Grid Gas. The rebate was awarded thanks in large part to an energy management system that regulates all aspects of the Y by controlling heating, cooling, lighting and more based on the needs of that part of the facility. The energy efficiency equipment installed with the energy efficiency incentive from National Grid includes upgrades to the facility's heating plant, installation of radiant heating and a high efficiency pool heater.
According to YMCA of Greater Nashua CEO Mike LaChance, "We are incredibly proud to receive this $117,000 grant from National Grid. When designing this building, we really wanted to create a Y that was both family-friendly and environmentally-friendly to better serve the people of Greater Nashua. The 44,000 square foot Y is built with the health and safety of the entire community in mind."
Since 2008, National Grid has served over 11,000 residential and non-residential customers in NH with its portfolio of natural gas energy efficiency programs and has provided customer rebates totaling over $8 million.
"The Nashua YMCA's energy efficiency efforts are setting the standard for other organizations in New Hampshire" said Timothy F. Horan, President of National Grid in New Hampshire. "It's gratifying for National Grid to be able to partner with group's like the Y to help fund their programs and assist them in realizing energy savings for years to come."
Program participants have saved 6,470,567 lifetime therms, or the equivalent annual greenhouse gas emissions from 6,344 passenger vehicles. (Source - U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Greenhouse Gas Equivalencies Calculator, May 2011.
National Grid's energy efficiency programs are funded through a charge on customer's monthly energy bills.

TAKES THE GREEN PLEDGE
St. Mary's Bank recently took the Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce's Green Pledge, earning a "Green Business" designation for its demonstrated commitment to environmentally sustainable business practices.
The credit union has several long term green initiatives in place, but its newly renovated branch office and education center at 48 Perimeter Road in Manchester is what really put the nonprofit financial institution over the top under the Green Pledge's program criteria. Some of the building's green features include "smart" systems to conserve energy and water, automatic lighting, and special sites for recycling a range of office products.
"The environment is part of the community we serve, and our new office demonstrates just how seriously we take our responsibility to conserve resources," said Robert DesMeules, St. Mary's Bank chief financial officer. "Going green is also an effective way to control costs, and that's a good thing for any business. I encourage every company to take the pledge - it's an eye-opening opportunity that yields many benefits for both the environment and the bottom line."
St. Mary's Bank has implemented a number of green initiatives in recent years, from a 'Going Paperless' campaign to support Conservation New Hampshire to participation in the Green Light Energy Efficient Loan Program. "One of the great things about taking the Green Pledge is that it gives us an opportunity to exchange ideas on green practices with other area businesses," said DesMeules.
The Green Pledge program is administered by the Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce's Green Committee. To take the Green Pledge, businesses must fill out a questionnaire and undergo a review of business practices by the committee. Using a rating system, businesses are designated a Beginner, Green Business, or Green Business Champion. Businesses may take the pledge annually.
ANNUAL 'GO PAPERLESS' CAMPAIGN SUPPORTS CONSERVATION
St. Mary's Bank recently made a $1,000 donation to the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests on behalf of members who elected to receive bank statements electronically. The credit union has donated a total of $4,000 to state environmental organizations since initiating its campaign to support paperless banking four years ago.
"Opting to receive your bank statements electronically instead of via snail mail may seem like a small thing to do, but when enough people do it, it makes a big difference," said Elizabeth Stodolski, director of marketing at St. Mary's Bank. "In addition to benefitting the environment, electronic statements arrive sooner, are more secure, and cost less. As a credit union, we are able to pass those savings directly on to our members." St. Mary's Bank donated $2 to the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests for each of the first 500 members who made the switch this year.
"It's clear that St. Mary's Bank members care about our environment and appreciate the need to conserve natural resources," said Jane Difley, president/forester of the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests. "We are grateful for this generous donation and the support of St. Mary's Bank's members."
The Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests is the state's oldest and largest non-profit land conservation and forestry organization. In order to preserve the quality of life New Hampshire residents know today, the goal of the Forest Society, in partnership with other conservation organizations, private landowners, and government, is to conserve an additional one million acres of the state's most significant natural lands for trails, parks, farms and forests by 2026.
Headquartered in Manchester, New Hampshire, St. Mary's Bank hasbranches in Manchester, Hudson, Londonderry, Milford and Nashua. Call 1-888-786-2791 or visit www.stmarysbank.com for more information.
