"Oh, that they were wise...that they would consider their latter end" (Deuteronomy 32:29 NKJV)
Recently, I read an article that published the results of a survey done on people over ninety years old. When asked what they would do differently if they had their life to live all over again, three answers constantly reemerged. (1) They would spend more time with family and friends, (2) they would take more risks and (3) they would focus on doing things that would live on after they died.
One of life's challenges is doing the things that ultimately matter. A life in which anything goes, is a life in which nothing goes. Wisdom is not only having the mindset and discipline to prioritize and the ability to focus on what is important, it's also knowing what to overlook. Petty things steal so much of our time and we end up living and working for all the wrong reasons! Apostle Paul was very conscious of this when he wrote, "the most important thing is that I complete my mission, the work that the Lord Jesus gave me." (Acts 20:24 NCV)
Take a look at your calendar. What and who is filling it? Is there a place there for family time? Do you regularly set aside time to spend with God for new directions? Is there time for doing what you enjoy? How long since you asked God, "What do you want me to do?", "What is required of me that nobody else can do?" "What is my life really about?"
An excerpt from the article I read really hit home with me. One of the ninety year old men interviewed wrote this: We go through life, get stuff, then die, leaving our stuff behind. And what happens to it? Our kids argue over it and like vultures they decide which stuff they want to take to their houses and what to discard. Nations fight over stuff, families are split over stuff. Husbands and wives argue about stuff more than any other issue. At the end its just stuff that really doesn't matter. Learn from this wise old man and live a life that is focused on things that really matter...God, family, friends and doing good for others.
Stay above...always.
