A FEW WORDS FROM GARY

Dear friends,

"Support locally-owned businesses."

As the owner of Lukas Liquor Superstore, I have thought about this statement for eleven years. The phrase alone seems to place responsibility on the customer. You have to buy from locally-owned for the good of the community. If you don't support locally-owned businesses, big out-of-town corporations will just get bigger. REALLY???

I believe the most important word in this statement is "support." Locally-owned businesses have just as much responsibility to support their community as the customer does to support the business. It should be a relationship of equal support. Does the locally-owned business offer something the big bad corporations can't? Does the locally-owned business give back to the community?

We at Lukas Liquor are proud of our responsibility to St. Louis. For eleven years we have worked hard to give you an experience you can't get from corporate big boys. For eleven years, we have been a major sponsor of "Friends of Kids with Cancer." For five years, we have been the only sponsor of the "Amazing Taste" for Angels' Arms.

We are proud of our relationship with our community and hope to keep supporting you for years to come.

Sincerely,

Gary Bilder

and proud resident of this great community

A LUKAS MILESTONE

We are all very proud to announce that on Monday August 29th, our longest-tenured cashier, Bob Derrick celebrated his 10 year anniversary at Lukas Liquor Superstore!

Bob is the only employee who has been at Lukas that long, and we are all thankful to have him as part of our team.

If you usually shop at Lukas on the weekends or in the evenings, you may not know Bob - he works weekday mornings and early-afternoons. A retired schoolteacher in the Parkway School District, Bob became a cashier here back in 2001. He has been an anchor at the front-end of the store since then with his easygoing smile and love of conversation. Bob really embodies what it means to be a Lukas employee - he's able to help you withyour purchase, and able to make you feel right at home.

Please - if you have some time in the coming weeks - stop by and wish him a happy anniversary. Lukas wouldn't be what it is today without Bob.

SEPTEMBER 18th

THE 5th ANNUAL AMAZING TASTE

Amazing Taste Logo

Taste over 500 Wines Beers & Spirits!

City of Wildwood's beautiful Town Center

1PM - 5PM

Lukas Liquor Superstore is thrilled to announce the 5th Annual Amazing Taste for Angels' Arms. We are proud to have been able to help this fantastic charity for the past 4 years - please come help us celebrate The Amazing Taste's 5th Year!
If you've never been to The Amazing Taste before, you have to see it to believe it! Lukas coordinates with dozens of vendors to bring you samples of over 500 wines, beers and spirits.
There are also piles of items to bid on via silent auction or that you can win via raffle! (Had your eye on a piece of lawn furniture or a mini fridge with your favorite beer logo on it? Odds are, you'll see it at The Amazing Taste!)

The event will be held, once again, at the beautiful Wildwood Town Center. Weather permitting, we will be able to USE their beautiful facilities this year (torrential rain moved last year's event under the cover of the parking garage - so this year's event will be held RAIN or SHINE!)

We've made several slight changes
to make this year better than ever...
  • Since we tend to run out of donated food at previous events, this year's event will be catered! There will be a wide variety of food available for everyone (vendors included!)
  • This year, tickets are ONLY available on the Angels' Arms website... There is a discounted rate for group purchases, so if you will be buying ten or more tickets, you will need to make arrangements with everyone before buying tickets (in other words - you cannot be 'added' to someone else's group purchase after the fact).
  • General Admission Tickets are $35 per person, or $30 per person in groups of 10 or more.
  • RESERVE tickets are $50 each (no quantity discounts). Reserve ticketholders will receive (only one) Riedel wine tasting glass and a special wristband allowing them to taste even more exclusive products.

Any customers who wish to purchase the products they taste can place orders with a Lukas Liquor Superstore associate (at the Lukas table). Special event-only pricing is available to those who place orders at the event.

(You cannot purchase any products at this event - purchases must be completed at Lukas Liquor Superstore no later than September 26, 2011 to receive event-pricing.)

Lukas Liquor Superstore will donate 5% of ALL sales from orders generated by the Amazing Taste.

SEPTEMBER PICKS OF THE MONTH

Gary:

Wente Riva Ranch Chardonnay

$16.99 750ml

If you ask Tim or Jon - picking Wente Riva Ranch Chardonnay is a bit of a cheat. This is one of the best-selling Chardonnays in the store (and for a good reason)! It's the "perfect" Chardonnay - not too dry, but with enough acidity to pair with lots of foods. But then again - nobody asked Tim or Jon...

Jon:
Entwine Merlot
$8.99 750ml
Another wine from the Wente family here, but this one is new to our store. Created in conjunction with the Food Network, the Entwine series of wines are marketed with food in mind! On the back of each varietal, you'll find food pairing suggestions. Here's what they have to say about the Merlot:

Juicy and mouthwatering - think mid-summer plums and cherries, with a hint of black tea.

"Entwines with" grilled pork; mac and cheese; meatloaf; pizza; salami; tomato sauce; and wild salmon.

Perfect for: weeknight dinners.

Tim:
Domaine Olivier Hillaire "H" Vin de France
$8.99 750ml
Looking for an introduction to "Franch" wines? Think you DON'T LIKE French wines? This wine is for you. It is a cousin to my favorite Cotes du Rhone this year (and my pick next month - the Domaine Olivier Hilaire Cotes du Rhone 2009), this is a red blend of Grenache (40%) Syrah (30%) and Carignane (30%). At only $8.99, you may expect a watered-down version of the Cotes du Rhone, but this is a serious wine! I don't often say this because we are such a big store with a huge selection - but this wine will NOT be around forever, and you don't want to miss out! Try a bottle and you'll be back for a case!

Adam E:
Purus Vodka
$27.99 750ml
"The Palate entry is surprisingly sweet, mellow and buttery in texture; midpalate continues the mild cereal sweetness in style and elegance. Concludes delicately sweet, buttery and with loads of layered character." Courtesy of Purus neck talker.

 Adam C:

Ayinger Oktoberfest

$3.49 16oz

"Ayinger Oktober Fest Märzen has a deep golden color tinted with amber. It is lightly sweet with a malty nose balanced with floral hops. Its medium to big body and alcohol is not overpowering. The soft dryness comes from long maturation."  Courtesy of ratebeer.com

GOVINO WINES GLASSES ARE HERE!

EVER HAD TO DRINK A
GOOD WINE FROM A
BAD GLASS?

Sure - we all keep our nice crystal at home... but when you're out on the patio or off on a picnic, you can't risk dropping or breaking one of those fancy pieces of stemware!

Finally - there is a solution!
A stemless wine "glass" that really does look and feel like crystal!

Govino wine glasses are reusable AND recyclable.
(While we've heard that Govino glasses can be washed in a dishwasher - the high temperatures they experience in home-dishwashing units will cause them to lose their beautiful luster very quickly. For best results - hand-wash is your best bet).

Featuring a unique "dimple" on the bottom of the glass to improve aeration and light dispersal, Govino glasses also have a nifty thumb rest on the side of the glass - you have to try these things out! They fit PERFECTLY in your hand... no more fumbling with stems while playing Bocce in the yard!

You can read more here, but, better yet, just stop by and pick up a set of 4 for only $12.95 this weekend!
