BLIND PINOT NOIR

"SPEED DATING" TASTING

Starting in March, we're instituting a monthly wine class schedule. Every 4th Wednesday will be an opportunity to taste high-end wines in a fun and engaging format!

Wine classes at Lukas are always fun and informative, and now you ALWAYS know when the next class will be! We will have a class every 4h Wednesday, but the format will change from time to time. We'll use a "speed dating" format to allow for a more efficient, informative and, believe it or not, more FUN tasting experience. Here's how it works:
  • Call or stop by Lukas anytime to register for the classes (payment is required in advance to attend, and space is limited - so plan ahead! These classes will sell out!)
  • Classes will begin at 6:30. At that time, we'll divide the group into smaller groups. Those groups will move around the room to different stations for a pre-determined amount of time (thus, a speed dating format).
  • After each group has made it around the room, you'll have a chance to revisit your favorites and mingle and have fun.

MARCH2011: Blind Pinot Noir Tasting

What's a Blind Pinot Noir Tasting you ask? It'll be just as described above, but everything you taste will be Pinot Noir. We want everyone to have fun and learn something at these classes, though, so in order to keep price and labels out of the equation until the end, the "speed dating" part of the tasting will be "blind" (everything will be poured from a decanter or paper bag). After everyone's tasted, we will reveal the wines from that evening and you will be able to mingle and revisit your favorites!

Date: March 23rd 2011

Time: 6:30 pm

Cost: $25 per person

We'll see you there!

FEBRUARY PICKS OF THE MONTH

Gary:

Apothic Red

An alluring blend of Zinfandel, Merlot & Syrah. This delicious little bargain sells itself - in fact, everyone here thinks that Gary cheated by selecting a wine that sells this well as his pick of the month. "He" has already sold nearly 10 cases of this wine this month! It's great wine, though, so our advance congratulations go to Gary for "winning" the February Pick of the Month!

$8.99 750ml

Kaitlyn:

Stone Paddock Scarlet Red

Just a damn good Bordeaux blend - this is a much bolder selection than Gary's, but it's well worth a taste! Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc & Malbec.
$14.99 750ml

Hannah:
 Frank Family Napa Zinfandel
Gary really hates that he hasn't won a pick of the month in a while, so he lets the sales history pick his wines. Hannah goes by her palate. This is a big, plush Zinfandel is everything you'd expect from Napa: bold, ripe blueberries, rich peppery spice and well-integrated tannins.
$24.99 750ml

Tim:
Bedrock Dolinsek Ranch Vineyard Heirloom 2009
An "Heirloom" Blend refers to a wine that is TRUELY made in the field. All contributing varietals are harvested together and co-fermented, creating a vineyard-specific blend. Most other blends are made of wines that have been vinified seperately and blended to create a style. I LOVE this wine, and wines from the 2008 vintages scored as high as 94 (Wine Advocate). Pick up a bottle before it's scored - there is NO MORE Bedrock wine to be had from this vintage - act now!
$35.99 750ml

Adam:
Three Olives "Dude"
From our super-serious Spirits Manager comes this most off-the-wall pick. A lemon-lime flavored vodka that tastes like... well, we're not allowed to say it's name, but it refers to the dewy moisture that collects on mountainside blades of grass in the early morning. Ahem.
$18.99 750ml

Mikkeller It's Alive

- Belgian Wild Ale - RateBeer:97

- BeerAdvocate:B+

- It's Alive! is Mikkellers answer and tribute to the trappist beer Orval. It's Alive is an easy-to-drink beer, with a lot of hops. The color is amber, the foam is high, white and dense. The potent Brettanomyces culture makes It's Alive continue to develop in the bottle.

Emelisse Barleywine

- BeerAdvocate:B-

- A barleywine on the lighter side. This barleywine is a nice introduction for those not looking to push their palate too far. Best served slightly chilled. At over 10% Alc. expect sweetness upfront with a bitter finish.

Tournay Black

- Foreign Stout - RateBeer:91

- BeerAdvocate:B+

- Tournay Black is a beer, refermented in the bottle, with an alcohol content of 7,6%. It contains only natural ingredients: water, four malts, two hops, yeast and sugar. We select special malts and very traditional hops to give it a powerful, long flavour in the mouth and a quite a strong hint of bitterness. This is a beer that will really appeal to Stout lovers!!

Mikkeller Black

- Imperial Stout - RateBeer:97

- BeerAdvocate:B+

- The strongest beer in Scandinavia. This imperial stout is the craziest, wildest, strongest beer from Mikkeller to this date. Not for sissies.......! Sample it fresh or store it for many many years to come!

Tournay Blond

- Belgian Tripel - RateBeer:86

- Beeradvocate:B+

- Tournay is a golden white beer with 6.7% alcohol content. It is refermented in the bottle and made from only natural ingredients: water, two malts, four hops, yeast and a little sugar for the fermentation in the bottle. Unfiltered and unpasteurised. Tournay is a very well-balanced beer, the flower hops used during the brew giving it a slightly dry, bitter aftertaste.

Haandbryggeriet Haandbakk

- Norwegian Sour Ale - RateBeer:99

- BeerAdvocate:A-

- The first wild yeast-fermented beer brewed in Norway for over 100 years. Aged in oak barrels for 2 years.

Tournay Saison Cazeau

- RateBeer:83

- BeerAdvocate:B+

- Saison Cazeau is a light white beer, refermented in the bottle, with 5% alcohol content. As well as the Pilsen malt and two hops which give it a really nice bitter flavour, Saison is laced with elderflowers which make it really refreshing. The elderflower only blooms for three weeks, which means that production of our Saison is very time-limited.

Emelisse Espresso Stout

- RateBeer:96

- BeerAdvocate:B

- The Emelisse Espresso Stout is enhanced by a blend of fine Italian espresso beans used in the brewing process. It boasts a blend of 90% Arabica and 10% Robusta, which combine to give the Emelisse Espresso Stout an extra spicy, full-bodied palate.

Amager Batch One

- Danish Barleywine - RateBeer:97

- BeerAdvocate:B+

- With this special brew, Batch One, we dared to experiment with combining our usual devotion to a solid malt profile with the addition of American aroma hops. Batch One is an American-inspired Ale characterized by its vast, full body and generous use of hops. In the glass, it has a reddish-brown colour with a coppery glow, and a beige-coloured head leaves a nice lacing behind. For this brew we have chosen to only use the noble Simcoe hop, both for boiling and the following dry-hopping. The hops give the beer its fresh citrus-like character and impart a solid bitterness to balance the sweet caramel malt.

Het Alternatief Bitter Truth

- Belgian IPA - RateBeer:89

- BeerAdvocate:B+

- This is a far hoppier beer than the smell would imply. Creamy mouthfeel with a proper level of carbonation. Good aftertaste but it is not as bitter as most DIPA's. It also doesn't linger as long.

Fantome BBB Dark White

- RateBeer:95

- BeerAdvocate:A-

- This brew pours a hazy copper/orange color with a soft beige head. It smells sweet with a bit of tart and spicy malty aromas. The taste is balanced with peppery seasoned flavors as well as malt and hops. Dark fruits like cherry and fig are present and a little bit of must comes through. The sweeter flavors linger in the end. It's medium in body and quite tasty and drinkable.

Saint Somewhere Pays Du Soleil

- Saison - RateBeer:91

- BeerAdvocate:B+

- Brewed with Palmetto berries and whole Hibiscus flowers. House saison yeast strain along with a dose of wild yeast at bottling add to the complexity.

Spirits News

NEW!

2 "digestivos" and an "apéritif"

These items arrived a week or so ago to very little fanfare, but if you are serious about food and drink, these are a must!

Cardamaro Amaro

From Piemonte, producer Giovanni Bosca uses wine from his estate as the base for this amaro. He then infuses the wine with two very curious ingredients - cardoon, which is a relative of the artichoke, and Blessed Thistle. The resulting spirit is less bitter than many amari, with a smooth, nutty, candied winter spice quality to it.

Cocchi Barolo Chinato

A glass of Cocchi's Barolo chinato is not a vinous experience you're likely to soon forget! In addition to quinine bark, rhubarb, gentian and a final addition of somewhat secreted spices, including cardamom seed, are added to this pleasantly bitter tipple, which ranks up there with Fernet Branca as the world's best digestivo.

Bonal Gentiane-Quina

Bonal Gentiane-Quina, once nicknamed "ouvre l'appetit" (the key to the appetite), is a delicious aperitif wine that has been in production since 1865. It is made by infusing gentian root, herbs from the Grande Chartreuse mountains, and cinchona (quinine), in a Mistelle base, producing a wine that is known for its complexity. It is traditionally enjoyed neat, on ice with a twist, or in many classic mixed drinks.

***This is a TRUE "quina" (pronounced "keen-a") which is an ingredient called for by several "classic" cocktail recipes. If you've seen the movie "Casino Royale" or read any the original James Bond novel of the same name, you know that Bond's "Vesper Martini" included an ingredient called "Kina Lillet." Until Bonal Gentiane-Quina was available, the only thing available was "Lillet Blanc" but the formulation had been changed for the American palate to exclude quinine. Quinine makes the wine (yes, it's actually a flavored wine, like vermouth) taste dry, despite the sugar and spices added, thus it's better in a mixed drink. To truely appreciate this strange product, try it in a Vesper Martini!***

(from Casino Royale

Three measures of Gordon's Gin, one of vodka, half a measure of Kina Lillet. Shake it very well until it's ice-cold, then add a large thin slice of lemon peel.

Brinley Gold Shipwreck Spiced Rum 36%abv

Brinley Gold Shipwreck Spiced Rum uses Caribbean rum that is aged for four years creating a very mellow spirit, yet full of flavors like orange, vanilla, clove and nutmeg. The recipie is based on and dedicated to an actual British ship that sank off the St. Kitt's coast in 1782.

Christian Brothers Honey 35%abv

Christian Brothers Honey is the ultimate in smoothness, infusing pure natural honey with the rich taste of Christian Brothers Brandy.  Distilled from premium grape varietals and aged in hand selected oak barrels. Fans of other "honey-infused" liqueurs will love this new product.
