LONG SHADOWS GIFT SETS
AVAILABLE NOW!
| |
(from the Long Shadows website) After twenty years at the helm of the Stimson Lane wine group (Chateau Ste. Michelle, Columbia Crest and other wineries), Allen Shoup retired to pursue a personal dream. For years he had envisioned a joint venture with highly acclaimed winemakers from different regions of the world. His goal was to bring their expertise to Washington to create some of the most special wines ever crafted from the region's top vineyards; wines that would stand shoulder to shoulder with the world's best.
For the first time EVER, the red wines of the Long Shadows Winery are available together, in one beautiful wooden gift box. Unlike any other gift set this season, this box features SIX highly-rated wines in one box.
In each box, you will get 1 of each of the following for only $315.00:
- 2006 Long Shadows Pirouette 93 Points Wine Enthusiast 54%Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 15% Petite Verdot, 6% Cabernet Franc, 5% Syrah "Concentrated and focused, it is expressive right out of the bottle, supple and clearly defined. Floral, darkly fruited, bursting with black cherry and cassis, detailed with licorice and stone, this excellent wine will be difficult to put away for aging, but well worth the effort."
- 2005 Long Shadows Chester-Kidder 93 Points Wine Advocate 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Syrah, 5% Merlot "Opaque purple-colored, it reveals an alluring nose of brooding black fruit, pencil lead, mineral, and spice box. Round and ripe on the palate, it borders on opulence while concealing enough tannin to support another 6-8 years of cellaring. The sweet, savory fruit carries through into the lengthy finish."
- 2007 Long Shadows Saggi 91 Points Wine Advocate 43% Sangiovese, 36% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Syrah "... It was aged for 18 months in 55% new French oak. Deep purple colored, it displays an expressive perfume of cedar, Asian spices, black cherry, and cassis. Supple and round on the palate, this savory offering has excellent volume, plenty of concentration, and enough structure to evolve for 1-2 years. It will drink nicely for the next 8-10 years."
- 2006 Sequel Syrah 93 Points Wine Advocate 96% Syrah 4% Cabernet Sauvignon "Aromas of cedar, smoke, game, bacon, and violets are alluring while leading to a round, layered, smooth-textured, full-bodied wine with several years of aging potential."
- 2006 Feather Cabernet Sauvignon 93 Points Wine Advocate 100% Cabernet Sauvignon "The wine was sourced from several prime vineyards and aged for 22 months in new French oak. The nose gives up aromas of toasty oak, scorched earth, Asian spices, black currant, and blackberry. Firm and structured yet elegant on the palate, there are layers of fruit and enough tannin to evolve for another 4-6 years."
- 2006 Pedestal Merlot 94 Points Wine Advocate 75% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petit Verdot "... reveals a fragrant nose of sandalwood, incense, sage, cinnamon, black cherry, and black currant. Elegant on the palate despite its ample size, it is loaded with succulent fruit set off by enough ripe tannin to support an additional 3-4 years of cellaring. It will deliver prime drinking from 2013 to 2027."
Again - only $315 for all 6! Save when you buy the gift set! |

WHAT'S TIM DRINKING RIGHT NOW?

Spotted Cow
New Glarus Brewing Co.
Recently, a new series began airing on The Discovery Channel entitled "Brew Masters." The series follows the founder and owner of The Dogfish Head Brewery, Sam Calagione and is basically a weekly commercial for the fantastically strange and awesome beers they make at Dogfish Head. Unfortunately for all of us here in St. Louis (and all over Missouri), Dogfish Head Beers are not available here. In fact, Dogfish Head beers are only available in 30 states - still, after each new episode, we field another round of phone calls asking "why can't I get Dogfish Head?" "If you guys could order me some, I'd take a couple of cases..." and so on. This is somewhat frustrating for those of us that work in a store that purports to offer the best selection of beer in St. Louis. It's hard to swallow our pride and explain that, while we have every been available in Missouri, there are many breweries (and wineries and distilleries) that we DON'T have.
Often, as is the case with Dogfish Head among many other breweries (i.e. New Glarus), the little guys can't come into a state like Missouri because there is TOO MUCH demand for their products, and they wouldn't be able to keep up! Not a bad problem to have, you might think... and you'd be right. But while the obvious answer would be to simply borrow some more money and expand their operation to keep up with the demand, many of these small(er) beverage artisans refuse to grow, out of fear of losing the ability to create a consistently unique and interesting product!
Unique and interesting often translates to "expensive" and "difficult to create", as is the case with my beer of choice tonight, Spotted Cow. This is a deceptively simple cask-conditioned ale made with barley, malt and a touch of corn. Not a watered-down adjunct lager here, though, this brew is hefty, cloudy and bitter with a big dose of sweetness from the corn on the back end.
Why, then, would someone writing about a store that carries SO MANY different beers choose to write about one of the beers NOT available in his store? Is it because the heart wants what it cannot have? Maybe. However, it could just be that that's what it's all about... They say "without the bitter, the sweet ain't so sweet." So why spend all your time chasing one flavor? Embrace the variety, even if that means wandering a bit sometimes! Taking the opportunity to taste what other craft brewers are doing keeps us interested, and what's the point in being interested without a few "high-water marks" or unattainable experiences to gauge your trip by? So here's to you, Spotted Cow and Dogfish Head and Stone and Yungling and all the other brews not available in Missouri. Thanks for keeping it unique and interesting!
P.S. Cheers, Eric! Thanks for the beers! Also, thanks for keeping us interested! It's beer-drinkers like you that make us better at what we do.
