SORRY ABOUT LAST WEEK

Ignoring my own good advice, I decided to totally "phone it in" with last week's email. When I sat down to write the email, all I can say is that I was struck with "writer's bock." Staring at my monitor (with nothing to drink) I began to wonder if anyone even bothered to read the content of these emails. "Were they only reading these to check up on the Saturday tastings?" I wondered. "Would I be able to reproduce the same snarky attitude that made writing an email to a couple thousand people at 11:30 at night at least passibly entertaining?" Could I misuse a few more quotation marks? The answers: a) sometimes b) yes, with alcohol and c) most definitely.

Julia and I had had a difficult time putting our 7 month old son to bed that night - and I had to be up in less than 6 hours - much less if I actually tried to be interesting... so I opted for the easy way out. Bitterly, I deleted all personal content from the email, sent it off, and headed to bed - sure that no one would notice.

Well, several people DID notice (sorry, Renee) and the email sucked, but don't get me wrong - only a handful of people complained - I'm sure there were lots of people that didn't even notice - or even open the email to begin with!

So what's the lesson here? Is it really, as I'd like to believe, all about me and the little indulgence I take with these emails? Does it really matter that there are cute (?) anecdotes and hidden in-jokes?

Nope. It doesn't. These emails are not read by many, but they are read by some. If they are reading the emails - most people are looking for one or two bits of information and nothing more.

Is the lesson, then, that we shouldn't bother with anything unique?

Nope again. All we can do is keep doing what we do. If some people get it - GREAT! We're going to continue to be that liquor store way out West (but not far enough for some) that's really big (but way too big for some) and has all those enthusiastic employees (who have been called "goofy and awkward" in online reviews of our store). Because - everyone here at Lukas - not just the megalomaniac author of these emails - LOVES  their job and we love being different.
If you enjoy shopping at a different kind of store, please tell your friends! If you enjoy reading a different kind of email, please forward this to your friends! If you don't - by all means - skip to the bottom... that's what you came for, and we'll see you Saturday. We hope we can change your mind!

NOVEMBER SCOTCH CLASS

Winston Evans
Sorry for the late notice - but better late than never! Sign up today for what is sure to be an illuminating and enjoyable class!

Meet Winston Evans
The Glenlivet Ambassador

The Glenlivet Ambassador for Chicago and the Midwest, Winston is proud to be representing The Glenlivet and sharing its glory wherever he goes.

Born and raised in Wales, Winston moved to Chicago in 2002, where he has worked as an actor, teacher and social worker, as well as representing The Glenlivet since May 2005.

Winston's biggest reward from his job as Ambassador is that every day he is able to share his knowledge about the fascinating world of Scotch Whisky and its heritage. "I'm truly a people person, and that's why this job is perfect for me," Winston says. "Scotch has long been a passion of mine, so to share a dram and a story with someone eager to learn is always a gratifying experience."

Evans now resides in Evanston, IL with his wife and son. His favorite Scotch is the beautifully structured and balanced The Glenlivet 18-Year-Old, cut with still spring water.

Come taste The Glenlivet family of Scotches with us Thursday, November 4th from 7:00 - 8:30. $40 cost with $20 back towards any purchase of The Glenlivet.

Call (636)227-4543 to make a reservation. Payment is required to hold a reservation. Seating is limited.

COME SEE OUR HIGHEST-RATED WINES!

Everyone knows that Lukas is a store like no other. There aren't many 24,000 square foot stores that specialize in alcoholic beverages, and among the handful that do exist, Lukas is the only place with the knowledgable and FRIENDLY staff necessary to navigate over HALF an ACRE of wine beer and spirits.

To that end - we took all of our top-rated wines (93 points and up) and put them in our "93 point Room" but after 10 years - it got pretty full of some pretty exciting wines!

We've taken ALL our 93 Point Room wines and put them in our Tasting Room - come have a look at our top-rated wines... we think you'll be rather impressed!

WHAT'S TIM DRINKING RIGHT NOW?

Timsdrinking HelbingHelbing Kümmel

1.0 Liter 35% ABV

I don't mean to use this space to confuse you, gentle reader, but I've again chosen a decidedly "weird" liqueur for this week's "What's Tim Drinking."

Helbing is a producer of Kümmel, which is a type of liqueur, derived of a grain spirit sweetened and flavored with carraway seed, cumin and fennel. Both vairieties available at Lukas come in the handy 1 liter size - perfect for the serious carraway seed enthusiast.

Not to harp too much on the "booze as stomach elixer" angle, but this stuff really soothes the nerves (duh) as well as the stomach (bonus), and as someone who likes to put his temper as well as his G.I. tract to their limits, I can appreciate that. Plus, if you write about it, you get to use my favorite diacritic, the umlaut! Hooray! Or shall I say Hüray!

Try some today. Or tommorrow. But definitely try some sün.

Zum Wohl!
