Sale Neon

Lukas Liquor Superstore Newsletter

January 2009 vol.1
Greetings!

Perhaps you've noticed that Lukas has never had a bright neon sign advertising a sale. Sometimes customers would walk in and ask if we were running any special sales that week. Proudly, we'd explain to them that at Lukas Liquor, we never have sales, and that they could find the same great prices throughout our store every day of the week and every month of the year.

Well, none of this has changed, and our loyal customers (that's you!) know that they can come to Lukas anytime and never have to worry about buying something at the best price. But the St. Louis customer always needs to be reassured - Hell, we LIVE in the Show-Me State (whatever that means). So in an effort to show our customers (new AND old) that Lukas really is the BEST place to buy Wine, Beer, Spirits and Liqueurs, we've set aside a special part of our store highlighting our Special Values. Simply walk to the very center of the store (between lay-down and stand-up wines) and you'll find an ever-changing display of amazing values! Read more about this in the "2-FOR" WINES" section of this email!

Lukas also has great spirits prices! Check out the section titled "EVERYDAY SPIRITS VALUES" to read more!
As always - you will also find great information on our "JANUARY PICKS OF THE MONTH" and "NEW SPIRITS".

Sincerely,

The Lukas Liquor Staff

Great Prices Everyday

Every month, the price we pay for wine beer and spirits changes. Therefore, we only buy when we know we'll be able to pass a great deal on to our customers.

Grocery stores and other liquor stores pay the same prices we do, but they don't pass on their saving. Instead, they simply charge a ridiculously high price when the items are not on sale, and lower the price by several dollars every couple of months so it looks like they're giving you a deal!

You would think this would be great for Lukas Liquor since our prices are always low... Actually, it just creates a customer base that expects to be tricked. Therefore, our customers are unfairly burdened by the worry of paying a fair price, rather than being able to buy what they want when they want!

We are mindful of this and have worked hard to give our customers the BEST prices throughout the store. Here are some examples...

Jack Daniels Black $35.99 1.75L
Jack Daniels Black $19.99 750ml
Smirnoff Vodka $17.99 1.75L

January Picks of the Month

Justin's Pick
Bodegas Borsao, 75% Garnacha & 25% Tempranillo $6.99 Campo de Borja
Always a great choice - this wine is silky-smooth - a tremendous value! Justin likes to pair a bottle of Borsao with a meatball sub while he watches Lost re-runs.

The 2007 Borsao is 80% Garnacha and 20% Tempranillo fermented in stainless steel. Dark ruby-colored, it has an enticing bouquet of spice box and black cherry. Balanced, with good depth and a bit of structure, this attractive, savory wine will provide pleasure for the next 2-3 years.
Score: 87 The Wine Advocate Jay Miller, August 2008.

Gary's Pick
Las Rocas Garnacha, Garnacha $10.99 Calatayud
"The grapes for Las Rocas are sourced from high altitude 70- to 100-year-old Garnacha vineyards. The 2006 Las Rocas Garnacha is dark crimson-colored with an alluring nose of spice box, mineral, black cherry, and black raspberry. Smooth-textured, round, and with no hard edges, this tasty effort is designed for immediate gratification. This is one worth buying by the case."

Tim's Pick
Velt.1, Grüner Veltliner $8.99 Austria
What the Hell is Grüner Veltliner? Well, although not one of the wines we often think of in the bracing cold of winter, this wine is similar to Sauvignon Blanc. It has crisp citrus and floral notes on the nose with a bracing citric acidity. I don't know about you, but I NEVER have enough white wine at home - so the Velt.1 is a great choice.

Kaitlyn's Pick
Montinore Estate, Müller-Thurgau $8.99 Willamette Valley
Another strange varietal... Müller-Thurgau? This grape was created by Dr. Hermann Müller in 1882 because he wanted a grape that was similar to the noble Riesling grape, but easier to grow (earlier to ripen) like the more common German workhorse, Sylvaner. Although this vairetal left much to be desiered in its early days, it has done well in some Washington and Oregon vineyards. The Montinore Estate wine that Kaitlyn has chosen is an easy-drinking semi-dry wine that you need to have available at home. Pick up several bottles today and share this interesting treat with your friends!

Haley's Pick
Campos Reales, Tempranillo $9.99 La Mancha
You may remember this wine from the last email. This is a Lukas Liquor Exclusive - a dleightful young wine... You know what? All you really need to know is that Haley thinks this is a Ridiculous Value, and she has about 6200 wines to choose from. Stop by the tasting this Saturday froim 1:00 to 4:00, as Amy will by pouring this wine (along with 7 others) and taste for yourself!

They're Here!

 vinturi

After a long back-order, the Vinturi Wine Aerators have arrived at Lukas!

We are often hesitant to recommend ANY new wine gadgets. Many of the products on the market at other stores are, quite frankly, a waste of money. After all - opening a bottle of wine, pouring a bottle of wine, storing a bottle of wine... these are not activities that require an advanced degree. Corkscrews have been used since the 1600s with relative ease, so why the need for a titanuim-plated carbine-action model with a compass on the stock and this thing which tells time?

Well, someone built a better mousetrap with the Vinturi Wine Aerator. Simply hold this device above your glass and pour your wine into the aerator. The elegant simplicity of this device is key... As your wine spirals and swirls through the aerator, a carbureator introduces even more air - No need to decant!

Here's the best part... IT'S ONLY $39.99 AT LUKAS LIQUOR SUPERSTORE!

-praise for the Vinturi:
"This is the newest wine gadget... pour the wine through it into a decanter and it immediately (by aerating it) makes the wine more approachable and ready to drink. Drink it right away!"
-Today

"If you hate to wait for a wine to breathe, you're in for a treat: the Vinturi Wine Aerator. With this handy device, you can insert air into the wine in a matter of mere moments."
-The New York Times

"Orson Welles might have served no wine before its time, but when your guests arrive early (or you're just dying for a glass of Rioja), this aerator will make wine table-ready in seconds."
-The Oprah Magazine
You said it Oprah!

A Few New Spirits

russian standardAnother of our favorites is back! Russian Standard vodka We were absolutely IN LOVE with this vodka last summer until it subsequently disappeared from the St. Louis market in the fall (those crazy Russians...)

In a world where a new vodka is born seemingly hourly, Russian Standard is a standout. Many of the new varieties of vodka tout their extensive multiple-distillation process or numerous filtration. Not so Russian Standard. Ask any true vodka aficionado (you can find Ryan or Tim at Lukas every day) and they will tell you that a true Russian vodka should be clean and pure, but it must also TASTE like something. A hint of sweetness from the hearty winter wheat used in its production is all that lingers with every sip of Russian Standard.
