 Remembering Our Troops

     HUnter

Greetings!

So many of us go through our days forgetting that there are thousands of our troops protecting freedom overseas. It may not be your family member, but it is someone's father, mother, brother, sister, child. As September 11th marks such a tragic time in our country history - it is the perfect time to let the men and women in our military know that we DO remember them and what they represent.

The Kendal Companies has made a commitment to support our troops by donating all proceeds from the sale of our handmade Cards for Charity this month to Operation Bartow Cares. This organization sends care packages to troops overseas. You can read more about them in the article below.

You can also get involved by making your own cards using the simple directions below. This is a great way to let children create a one-of-a kind gift. Many soldiers do not receive any packages from home. Anysoldier.com is a great site to find soldiers to "adopt" and send your card.

Show your appreciate the entire year, not just around 9/11, by flying your flag at home, displaying on your car and donating throughout the year. Show the troops you care by reaching out.

My brother (pictured above) served in Iraq and we are grateful to have him home. Having  him serve his time justified to me the sacrifice the troop really CHOSE to make. Support our troops until they all come home.

CREATE YOUR OWN CARD TO SEND!

Supplies Needed:
1 Sheet Craft Paper
Greeting Card Sized Envelope
Scissors
Double Sided Tape or Glue
Scraps of Colored paper
Magazine Cuttings, stickers,embellishments

Start by putting newspaper down on your work space to protect it from glue, glitter and other messy supplies. Fold one sheet of construction or card stock paper in half. Measure it and cut it tot he envelopes size. Have your child look trough magazines for images that represent America...flags, stars, good old American hamburgers, anything that would make someone far away from home smile....Have her cut them out and glue to the outside of the card. The front is a great place to add glitter, buttons, sequins - the more creative the better! For the inside, have your child write out a thank you or search the Internet for card sayings she can copy. There are many card services that have quotes you can use that do not have copyrights. You can then go to AnySoldier.org and search for the address of a solider in need. A good thing to do is also place a picture of your child inside the card when you send it. I like to take a picture of Grace actually making or holding the card we are sending. I also write a little note myself on the back of the card, expressing my thanks. I promise you - cards made this way will make even the hardest solider weep with gratitude. If nothing else, you and your child will have a few minutes of quality time together - and maybe a little lesson in sacrifice and duty.
