Working to Stem the AIDS Epidemic

"End AIDS" - It's In Your Hands"

LHTM 09 Logo

In the three decades since its first recognition, AIDS has altered the way we live and love. Nearly 30 million people worldwide have died as a result of this disease. Stoked by lack of access to adequate health care, stigma, poverty and ignorance, the pandemic rages on in communities throughout our globe. Here in the United States, the pain and suffering caused by AIDS has been disproportionately felt by African Americans and Latinos.  Together, these two groups make up nearly two-thirds of the people living with the HIV virus in the U.S. today.

One of the ways that the Hispanic Federation and other health advocacy organizations have been trying to stem the spread of HIV/AIDS in affected and at-risk communities is through HIV testing. Testing helps people get informed, and allows those affected to protect their loved ones and access life-prolonging HIV treatments. Six years ago, the Federation partnered with the Latino Commission on AIDS and the New York State AIDS Institute to launch Latino HIV Testing Month (LHTM) during the month of July. The goal was and is to increase the availability and access to HIV testing in Latino communities throughout New York State. Last year, over 10,000 Latinos were tested as a result of this initiative. With your help, we're hoping to increase those numbers this year. Please visit our LHTM website, www.latinohivtesting.org, to see how you can join the LHTM movement by getting tested now or by offering free HIV testing in July. Together, we can help turn the tide of HIV/AIDS in our communities.

HF Launches American History Course

The Hispanic Federation recently launched its latest educational tool to help immigrants integrate and take active roles in leading their communities: the American Civics Track (ACT) course. This groundbreaking curriculum will offer immigrants interactive lectures on American history, focusing on the U.S. Constitution, the American Political System, Policymaking, Civic Engagement and Social Change Movements. Unlike traditional history classes, this course will highlight the fact that the U.S. is a "nation of immigrants," depicting the essential contributions immigrants have made to the United States and portraying the various forms of discrimination and hostility that immigrants have endured and prospered against since the founding of our nation.  Read more...

Helping Latinos Improve

their Financial Security

In partnership with Wells Fargo, the Hispanic Federation has begun the second phase of its successful personal finance workshop series: Hands on Banking. On June 28th and 29th, the Hands on Banking team worked with AARP and Greenpath Inc to help more than 60 individuals fifty years and older learn how they can improve their financial circumstances. The workshops focused on debt reduction, savings, and fraud protection. The next workshop series will be open to individuals of all ages and take place on Monday, July 11th (in English) and Monday, July 25th (in Spanish) from 6pm to 8pm at the Hispanic Federation's Las Americas Conference Center. To enroll or find out about future workshop dates, please contact our Economic Development Director, Lucia Perez Bernhardt

Making New York City Greener and Healthier

HF Teaches Tree Planting

The Hispanic Federation (HF) has joined forces with the New York Restoration Project (NYRP) to help advance the important and ambitious goal of MillionTreesNYC - to plant and care for one million new trees across the city's five boroughs by 2017. Specifically, the Federation is working with NYRP to educate Hispanics on the environmental, health, and economic benefits of trees to New York City Latino neighborhoods.  To date, the Federation has conducted five trainings - one in each NYC borough - on best practices related to the planting and maintenance of trees.

Thanks to additional support provided by Toyota, the Federation will be able to ramp up these efforts and train a new cadre of Latino residents in New York City on tree care and maintenance. For additional information regarding this project and the Federation's environment work, please contact our Vice President for External Relations, Frankie Miranda.
