Can you say Nueva Jersey? According to recently released Census data, New Jersey's Latino/Hispanic population grew from 1.1 million to 1.6 million over the past decade, and the Latino share of the population grew from 13.3% to 17.7%. Latinos are now the state's second-largest population group. Due in large part to the Hispanic population boom, the overall community of "el estado jardin" grew 4.5 percent, to nearly 8.8 million people. There are now substantial Hispanic populations in almost every one of New Jersey's 21 counties.

Despite our undeniable presence across the state, Latinos are dramatically under represented in the New Jersey State Legislature. At present, there is one Hispanic state senator and six assembly members. If we base equity from a simple mathematical standpoint, there should be 13 assembly members and seven state senators.

When the NJ Redistricting Commission considers configuring New Jersey's 40 legislative districts to reflect population shifts over the past decade, they should look no further than the Hispanic community. We look forward to working with our Latino leadership in New Jersey to send that message loud and clear. For more information on the Hispanic Federation's census and redistricting efforts, please contact Jose Calderon.

¡Hasta Luego!
