Saludos,

We are all extremely excited that this Sunday the Federation will be presenting its 4th Annual Get Up! Get Moving! health fair. The event will be held on August 29th at the Marta Valle High School (145 Stanton Street) on the Lower East Side of Manhattan from 11:00AM to 4:00PM. Designed to educate Latinos on fitness, weight and healthy lifestyles, the fair will feature a multitude of health screenings, workshops, sporting activities, live music, dance lessons and competition, giveaways and more. We are deeply grateful to our co-host the National Alliance for Hispanic Health and our lead local sponsor TOYOTA for making this year's Get Up! Get Moving! event possible.  Additional local support is being provided byAetna, Astrazeneca, Pfizer Helpful Answers, Asma en Español, and Southwest Airlines. Please make it a point to drop by with family and friends on the 29th. We're looking forward to dancing and celebrating to your health! To RSVP, please contact 1-866-HF AYUDA.

Last month we presented the findings of our year-long research study on how Latinos were faring in New York City's workforce development system. The results of this research, captured in our report Futures in the Balance, underscored how access and eligibility - as well as the quality and effectiveness of Workforce1 Centers - prevent many Latinos from benefiting from public workforce development programs.  While the report indicated how the system overall is failing Latinos, it also highlighted clear opportunities for reform. Over the next year, we look forward to working with community, workforce providers, philanthropic and government leaders to drive systemic changes in the current system. The long term goal will be to increase the numbers of low-income Latinos and Latino subgroups who are able to successfully access and derive benefit from the workforce development system. If you are interested in helping us in this critical effort, please contact our Program Director for Advocacy, Guadalupe González

HF Energy Efficiency Program is Moving On Up to The Bronx

Much like their counterparts have done in Washington Heights and Inwood over the past year, Bronx business owners can now apply to receive FREE lighting retrofits in their establishments.  This expansion of services is being made possible thanks to the generous support of Walmart. To date, more than 125 businesses have been able to lower their carbon footprint and significantly reduce their energy costs as a result of this initiative.

To apply, businesses must be current on their Con Edison energy bills, have an annual electric bill under $75,000 and be located in the Bronx. All applicants will be responded to on a first-come, first-serve basis.

For more information please contact Marisa Casellas.

Anti-Homophobia Campaign

The Hispanic Federation is currently working on the development of a public education campaign to address the harmful effects of homophobia. Aside from the individual pain homophobic attitudes inflict, the continuing stigma attached to same-sex relations lead many Latino gays, bisexuals and transgenders to forgo HIV prevention services, practice risky sex behaviors and even fail to discuss HIV and sex.

In partnership with its LUCES (Latinos Unidos Contra El SIDA) coalition, the Federation is convening a series of focus groups to determine what strategies can be carried out to positively address homophobia within the Latino community. Specifically, the objectives of the focus groups will be to:
  • Understand perceptions, ideas and attitudes toward Latino LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender) persons among the broader New York Latino community
  • Identify and gain a deeper understanding of LGBT experiences of homophobia within the general Latino community
  • Understand, from the perspective of Latino LGBT persons, what approaches could be taken to help eliminate homophobia among Latinos
