Saludos, This past Wednesday, U.S. District Judge Susan Bolton issued an injunction that will block key provisions of Arizona's racial-profiling law, known as SB 1070, from taking effect. We are pleased that this ruling will prevent the most heinous provisions of SB 1070 from going into effect. Judge Bolton affirmed the simple truth that bypassing federal law to harass Americans based on race or ethnicity defies our nation's most basic constitutional rights.
The district court's decision is a crucial first step but much work remains. Arizona Governor Jan Brewer has already filed an appeal to overturn Judge Bolton's temporary injunction. Copy-cat legislation has also been threatened in state legislatures around the country proving that now more than ever we need Congress to enact immigration reform that is effective and humane. A recent survey we conducted nationally, " U.S. Latinos' Perceptions & Actions Around Immigration Debate," clearly indicated that the vast majority of Latinos are opposed to Arizona's SB 1070 law and that the passage of immigration reform is of paramount importance to them. The reform bill must focus on family reunification, provide an earned and clear path to citizenship for our nation's current undocumented population, and protect the civil rights and liberties of all Americans. For more on our immigration principles and advocacy, please contact our Washington DC Director, Chris Espinosa.
