Message from the President
Lillian Rodríguez López

Mil gracias to all the wonderful donors who helped make our 20th Anniversary Gala a spectacular success. These are difficult economic times, and your participation in our gala is a testament to your continued belief in the importance of our work. We could not have asked for a better group of honorees to celebrate this special moment in our history: State Farm Insurance, Hispanic Federation Founding President Luis A. Miranda, Jr, International Fashion Designer Angel Sánchez, New York Times Best Selling Author Nina Garcia, and Award-Winning Recording Artist Willie Colón. I am deeply grateful to each one of them for their commitment to serve and strengthen our organization and community. This event was made possible by the very hard work of the Federation staff, the Board of Directors and our Gala Committee, led by our Chair Cristina Schwarz. I hope that you will enjoy the photos displayed in our gala webpage (click here).   We had an amazing time and look forward to being with you at Gala 2011.

I know all of you have been actively following what's happening in Arizona and the troubling anti-immigrant climate that continues to undermine our families and communities across the nation. The plight and treatment of immigrants is the civil rights issue of our time. We must speak with a unified voice and challenge any unjust actions directed at those we care for and serve. It is clear that measures like Arizona's SB 1070 exist in part because the federal government has failed to act to fix our broken immigration system. We must renew our efforts to call upon Congress and President Obama to pass progressive immigration reform now! To get involved and find out more about our immigration advocacy, please contact our Senior Vice President, Jose Calderon. ¡Hasta pronto!
Taking Action Against Arizona's Anti-Immigration Law

The signing into law of SB 1070 by Arizona Governor Jan Brewer represents an affront to the American ideals of freedom, civil rights and equality. The bill has created a fear of racial profiling by the immigrant and Latino community as it allows local Arizona law enforcement to interrogate person's they believe may be in the state without legal papers, and proceed to arrest and detain them if found to be undocumented. It is a law that simply cannot be enforced without relying on external factors such as race, ethnicity and language skills and could lead to widespread and indiscriminate civil rights violations against Latinos residing or visiting the state of Arizona.  Read full article

Census Update
 Census Enumerators ID
On May 1, Census takers or enumerators began visiting addresses of people who did not return their form, returned an incomplete or late form, or who did not receive forms in the mail.
If you fall in any of those categories, you may have already received a friendly knock on the door from a Census enumerator. For those of you that have missed being counted, we ask that you please open your doors and cooperate with the official census takers! By doing so you will be helping to ensure that your community receives its fair share of more than $400 billion in annual federal funds for essential community services, as well as proper representation in Congress and state and local levels of government. Mary Kay Foundation observes National Domestic Violence Awareness Month by awarding grants to deserving women's shelters across the United States. In 2009, the foundation awarded grants of $20,000 each to more than 150 women's shelters across the nation for a total of $3 million.
