Dancers Saludos! It's hard to believe that the first half of 2009 has come and gone. In our line of work - which is wonderfully rewarding but all consuming - days and seasons just seem to fly by. We have certainly had an eventful six months here at the Federation.  Providing hundreds of families with home foreclosure prevention assistance, helping thousands make the transition to digital television, and beginning large-scale replication of our early childhood education and college prep parental involvement initiative. As we look forward, we realize that the second half will be just as interesting, exciting and challenging as our first half.

This summer we will continue to work to push for the passage of progressive national health care reform and a just comprehensive immigration bill. The Federation is also set to launch its New American Civics Class, Latino Nonprofit Financial Management Initiative, Financial Management Training Series and the 11th cohort of its Hispanic Leadership Institute. In addition, we will be organizing our 3rd Annual "Get Up, Get Moving" Health Fair in August and the Long Island Legislative Somos Conference in September/October.  We are also preparing for a Global Warming Conference in the Fall and the 7th National Latino AIDS Awareness Day on October 15th.

We invite you to visit www.hispanicfederation.org and HF's Facebook page to receive up to the minute information about these and other HF programs and special events.

Best,
Lillian
July Is Latino HIV
Testing Month

LHTM logo

Far too many Latinos remain unaware of their HIV positive status.  HIV testing is a critical element in stopping the transmission of the HIV virus, preventing the spread of AIDS, and allowing those affected to access life-prolonging treatments.

To address this issue, the Federation's LUCES coalition, the Latino Commission on AIDS and the NYS AIDS Institute created Latino HIV Testing Month (LHTM). Observed in July, LHTM is a focal point for Latino HIV testing activities in New York State.

HF has granted $65,000 to over 20 agencies to carry out HIV testing activities in their communities.  These organizations have teamed up to test thousands of Latinos at health fairs, cultural events and community-wide forums.

End AIDS - It's in Your Hands! Remind your friends, neighbors and loved ones that testing is the only way to know if you have been affected with HIV/AIDS. To find out where testing sites are near you visit, www.latinohivtesting.org.
These Are The Facts

More than 100,000 New Yorkers are living with HIV. Nearly 1/3 (32%) of these individuals are of Hispanic/Latino descent

As many as 1 in 4 don't know they're infected

The rate of HIV infection among Hispanic women is 13 times higher than white women in New York

Latino men are 4 times more likely to die of AIDS than white men

Hispanic teens represent more than 1 in 5 (21%) of the new AIDS cases reported among teens (ages 13-19)
