WHAT: Experts on the relationship of the pending health care reform legislation, scheduled to be voted upon on Sunday, March 21st, to Catholic social teaching and to abortion will be speaking to members of the media about new data. Much attention has been paid to how Catholic members of Congress and Catholic constituencies view the legislation.
This week, the New England Journal of Medicine published an article Patrick Whelan, the president of Catholic Democrats, that demonstrated the abortion rate in Massachusetts went down after the implementation of universal health care. Additionally, Catholic Democrats recently published a policy brief by national director Steve Krueger that discusses the status quo in relation to private health insurance and Medicaid coverage and exposes the misinformation that supporters of the Stupak Amendment are promoting regarding the Senate bill.
At the same time, Ellen-Marie Whelan, associate director of health policy and senior health policy analyst for the Center for American Progress Action Fund, will be on the call to discuss her recent policy paper that looks at how the pending health care legislation reflects the criteria of health reform established by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.
