Catholic Democrats Releases Video in Spanish and English Supporting Judge Sotomayor
Encourages US Senate to Show Strong Support in Confirmation

Boston, MA: Catholic Democrats today released a new video supporting Judge Sonia Sotomayor's nomination to the US Supreme Court as she faces a confirmation vote in the US Senate this week. The videos, in both Spanish and English, feature Professor Jaime Vidal, Ph.D., a retired Catholic Theologian, former Assistant Director of the Cushwa Center for the Study of American Catholicism at the University of Notre Dame and the former Director of the Franciscan Press at Quincy University.
"This historic nomination underscores President Obama's interest in bringing new points of view to the workings of our government," said Dr. Patrick Whelan, president of Catholic Democrats. "Judge Sotomayor has more judicial experience than any of the currently serving Supreme Court justices had when appointed. The President's nomination of an unprecedented number of Catholics to his Cabinet, and now to the Supreme Court, demonstrates how important the Catholic voice has become as part of our shared American story. Judge Sotomayor's nomination also recognizes the essential and growing contribution of Latinos to the intellectual and political life of America."
According to the US Bishops Conference, Americans of Hispanic descent now represent more than a third of United States Catholics, and more than half of Catholics under the age of 25.
"Judge Sotomayor's July confirmation hearings demonstrated the commitment she shares with President Obama to seek the common good, a central theme of the Catholic Social Tradition," said Steve Krueger, national director of Catholic Democrats. "While many on the ideological Right sought to stir a divisive rhetorical caldron of the worst kind, Judge Sotomayor answered her critics with intelligence, expertise and grace. President Obama and Judge Sotomayor have demonstrated wisdom throughout this nomination process. We encourage the U.S. Senate to do the same with a strong show of support in confirming her as the next Associate Justice to the Supreme Court."

Hello. I'm Jaime Vidal. I'm a native of Puerto Rico, a committed Democrat, a practicing Catholic and professor of theology. I want to speak to you on behalf of my friends at Catholic Democrats about President Obama's choice of Judge Sonia Sotomayor for the U.S. Supreme Court. Like Judge Sotomayor, I am proud and thankful to be a part of our shared story. She is the right choice, and I hope you'll join me and millions of Americans in supporting her nomination.
A graduate of Princeton with high honors, and an editor of the Yale Law Review, a tough prosecutor, and a corporate litigator, a judge of wide experience in a variety of courts, Judge Sotomayor's credentials are unassailable. But there is more to Judge Sotomayor than just a resume.
Her story is a uniquely American one, and a story that many of us, black, white, or Latino; young or old, male or female; of any faith; can relate to. It is, in many ways, a universal story - overcoming the tough odds to prosper and thrive.
Today, I ask you to join me, Catholic Democrats, and millions of Americans of every faith and political persuasion in standing behind Judge Sonia Sotomayor. Her story is our story and her success is our shared success.

Boston, MA: La organizaci�n Catholic Democrats acaba de presentar al p�blico un nuevo video a favor del nombramiento de la juez Sonia Sotomayor para el Tribunal Supremo, ahora que el Senado est� por votar sobre su confirmaci�n para este puesto. Los videos, presentados tanto en ingl�s como en espa�ol, presentan al Doctor Jaime Vidal, profesor retirado de Teolog�a Cat�lica , ex Sub-Director del Centro Cushwa para el estudio del Catolicismo en los Estados Unidos en la Universidad de Notre Dame y ex Director de la Prensa Franciscana en la Universidad de Quincy.
"Este nombramiento hist�rico subraya el inter�s del Presidente Obama por introducir nuevos puntos de vista en nuestro gobierno," dice el Dr. Patrick Whelan, presidente de la agrupaci�n Catholic Democrats. "La Juez Sotomayor tiene mas experiencia en los tribunales que la que ten�a ninguno de los actuales Jueces del Tribunal Supremo al momento de ser nombrados. El hecho de que el Presidente haya nombrado un n�mero de cat�licos sin precedente hasta ahora para puestos en su Gabinete, y ahora para el Tribunal Supremo, demuestra la importancia que la comunidad cat�lica ha adquirido como parte de nuestra historia colectiva como naci�n. El nombramiento de la Juez Sotomayor tambi�n reconoce la contribuci�n esencial y creciente de los Latinos a la vida intelectual y pol�tica de los Estados Unidos."
Seg�n estad�sticas de la Conferencia de Obispos Cat�licos de los Estados Unidos, los Latinos en este momento constituyen mas de una tercera parte de los cat�licos de este pa�s, y mas de la mitad de los cat�licos menores de 25 a�os.
"Las vistas p�blicas sobre la confirmaci�n del nombramiento de la Juez Sotomayor que tuvieron lugar en julio demostraron el compromiso que ella comparte con el Presidente Obama de luchar siempre por el bien com�n, lo cual es un tema central en la Tradici�n Cat�lica," dice Steve Krueger, director nacional de la agrupaci�n Catholic Democrats. "Cuando muchos miembros de la Extrema Derecha se esforzaron por crear luchas ideol�gicas usando recursos demag�gicos de la peor especie, la Juez Sotomayor les respondi� con gran inteligencia, demostrando su pericia legal y su gracia personal. Tanto el Presidente Obama como la Juez Sotomayor han mostrado sabidur�a y prudencia a lo largo de este proceso de nombramiento y confirmaci�n. Alentamos al Senado a que muestre estas mismas cualidades confirm�ndola con una muestra fuerte de respaldo para el puesto de Juez del Tribunal Supremo."
