Catholic Democrats Applauds President Obama and President Fr. Jenkins in Leading Our Nation Forward to find Common Ground

BOSTON -   The leadership of Catholic Democrats, a national organization committed to promoting Catholic Social Teaching and progressive action, released the following statement applauding President Obama's landmark speech at the University of Notre Dame this afternoon.  Catholic Democrats launched the Catholics for Notre Dame Web site last week.

Catholic Democrats President Patrick Whelan
"Today is an affirmation of the role that Catholics in the United States and Catholic education play in our national story.  More importantly, it was a historic moment in what is already a historic Presidency.  Today, President Obama came to Notre Dame in the midst of a political firestorm created by a small minority of outside agitators. He faced his critics and addressed them with compassion  and found the appropriate balance between faith and reason."

President Obama called us to find common ground when he said 'when we open our hearts and our minds to those who may not think like we do or believe what we do - that's when we discover at least the possibility of common ground.'"

Catholics Democrats National Director Steve Krueger
"We commend the vision and courage of Fr. Jenkins for inviting President Obama to be the commencement speaker at the University of Notre Dame today.  His inspiring introductory remarks opened doors for dialogue consistent with the legacy of Catholic education.

Today is about the next chapter in our national story, and President Obama and Fr. Jenkins laid out a sweeping vision for our future calling on the better angels of our nature. Despite the best efforts of a vocal and extremist fringe to interrupt the President's speech and distract from honoring the class of 2009, President Obama, Fr. Jenkins, and the Notre Dame student body showed why Notre Dame is an institution that every American, regardless of their faith can be proud of.  We are grateful to the President and Fr. Jenkins for moving the debate to a constructive place that finds common ground and moves us toward solutions that move our nation forward."
