Catholics for Notre Dame Web Site Launched by  Catholic Democrats
BOSTON -   Catholic Democrats, a group that supports the University of Notre Dame's decision to invite President Obama to be its commencement speaker May 17th, today launched www.CatholicsforNotreDame.org to support its efforts.

Catholic Democrats promotes Catholic social teaching and its potential to help solve the broad range of problems confronting all Americans.  Catholics who support the University of Notre Dame and the legacy of Catholic educational excellence will find on this Web site the resources they need to make their voices heard, including a statement of support for Notre Dame, as well as a new video, "Catholic in America."

In recent weeks, Notre Dame has come under fire from conservative activists for inviting the President to speak at Sunday's commencement.  The attacks have been echoed by a vocal minority of bishops to varying degrees.  Critics have pointed to a single issue - abortion - as the reason for their protest.

"Our network of supporters across the country have joined together in support of excellence in Catholic higher education, and of Notre Dame in particular, against the kind of extremist attacks we've all heard," said Dr. Patrick Whelan, president of Catholic Democrats.  "We are providing another perspective - one that reflects the mainstream view of Catholics - to shed light on this fabricated controversy.  Our goal is to provide our fellow Catholics with the resources and information needed to bring some rationality back to the public debate."

"Catholics voted for President Obama by a larger percentage than the general population and they continue to support him because of his actions on the issues they care about most -  including the economy, health care, poverty, torture - issues that reflect values of Catholic Social Teaching," said Steve Krueger, national director of Catholic Democrats.  "We hope that our efforts will promote some balance in the public square and will direct attention to the Catholic sensibility of bringing both faith and reason to bear on the moral issues of our time."
