Lavender Wind Farm
Lavender Wind Farm
Greetings!

Yesterday a woman called because she had lost her recipe for our Lavender Household Cleaner and wanted me to read it to her.  She told me she's been making it as gifts for friends and family and they LOVE IT.  Cool, eh? So, I decided to share it with all of you, so you can make up gifts when you get the urge. How about making some spring cleaning baskets for your people?

Lavender Household Cleaner

Supplies Needed:

Empty spray bottle
Liquid soap or detergent
White distilled vinegar
Borax
Hydrosol or distilled water
Lavender essential oil

MIX 2 Tbsp vinegar with 1 tsp borax.  Fill the bottle with hot hydrosol or distilled water.  Shake until borax is disolved.  Add 1/8 C liquid soap/detergent.  Add 15 drops Lavender Essential Oil (Available from our farm)

Now you've got two farms to cheer, ability to make a cool new spring cleaning gift, and a chance to help us find a tractor and relief efforts in Haiti.

Sincerely,

Sarah and the staff here on the farm

Manufacturing Locally

I've been working like crazy getting some product made before the season hits. It is a challenge to get access to commercial kitchens to manufacture items, but I've got a great deal going at Greenbank Farm.

For those who don't know, Greenbank Farm is a publicly owned farm here on Whidbey Island. It was purchased in 1997 and has been slowly being refurbished and now it has several thriving businesses and organizations. To see more info, click here for a video you can watch about Greenbank Farm.

Whidbey Pies has a manufacturing kitchen that is perfect for us to use to manufacture our baking mixes. So I order tons of supplies, load up the van and head down to work at Greenbank Farm instead of mine.

One of my favorite things to do while working is to listen to podcasts from NPR, some of which are laugh-out-loud funny. I'm sure people think I'm nuts when all of a sudden I start laughing in the quiet of the workspace. The upshot is, we now have a good supply of mixes.

Another business at Greenbank Farm is Greenbank Cheese. They have a huge supply of cheeses and they carry a few of our products, too - we love them.

Greenbank Farm is a community resource, we hope our local friends support the farm and our visitors and fans will visit it when they are here on the island.

TRACTOR - HELP!

If any of you know of any high-clearance tractors that are in the area, please let me know. We are scouring the whole country to find a tractor that has more than 24" of clearance underneath so we can straddle a lavender row while tilling, weeding, and spreading fertilizer.

Someday, I hope we can find some kind of harvester, too, but that is later.

First a tractor.  There seem to be some that were made a few decades ago, but they are hard to find, especially ones in good condition. There are some old corn detasseling tractors that might work. I'm going to talk to a welder and other tractor experts to see what they say can be done.

Finding or creating the right equipment is one of the hardest things to do. I'm sure the farmers that read this letter will agree.

Reward for a lead that results in a purchase of a tractor!  You can get a $50 Gift Certificate if your lead finds us our new tractor.
