MEAL PLANNING AND OTHER FOOD ISSUES
By L. Barzune M.D.
A number of you have been having problems following the recommended guidelines for your meals. You should be on a high protein, low fat, low-starchy- carb program. What to eat and how to fix it can be a challenge for some, particularly after a few months of living with your weight loss surgery, no matter which one you have chosen. We often hear, "If I eat another piece of grilled 'whatever,' I'll choke", what can I do for variety? There are a lot of variations on ways to fix and flavor foods that are interesting and imaginative .The secret is, you have to put some effort into the process. Food becomes boring and uninteresting if there is not some variation and variety in the planning of your meals. Like I said, it takes your ACTIVE participation in the planning and preparation. Meal planning is like planning everything else in your life. You plan which outfits you are going to wear this week, well maybe not the guys. You plan your work, recreational and exercise schedule in advance. You plan your kid's activities, both before and after school. There is no reason why you can't sit down and do a meal plan for a week. Some of you make thinking, in general, about what you are going to prepare for dinner over the next week, too big of a deal. Remember you are to be on a HIGH PROTEIN, LOW FAT, and LOW STARCHY CARB eating program now and for ever. You also need to remember not to gradually increase portion sizes, as time passes. I will review the GUIDELINES FOR SUCCESS after weight loss surgery. You need 40-60 grams of protein / 24 hours. If you can't eat this much protein over a day, one of the recommended protein drinks that either I or Dr. Gonzalez suggest, will give you almost the daily amount required. Dr. Gonzalez likes the Bariatric Advantage products and I prefer the Ultimate Protein System by Biochem protein shakes. In your meal plan, you need to include crunchy veggies, (these are low glycemic index carbs) and you can include a starchy carb (these are high glycemic index carbs) if you want. These are the foods on the list that I give you in the office- the BAD GIRL/GUY FOOD TO EAT LAST OR AVOID group. Get a notebook or make a file on your computer to keep meal plans in. Prepare a plan for a week at a time.

Support Group Julie Shaw, RDLD, CNSD will be our speaker on Sept. 8th. She is the dietician at Medical City Dallas, who now sees all the weight loss patients as part of the pre-operative evaluation for our Bariatric Surgery Center for Excellence program . She is experienced and understands your needs and how to present the POST OP LIFETIME EATING PROGRAM that is recommended for success. She is an engaging speaker who has presented to our group in the past. The topic for the September 8, 2008 meeting will be MEAL PLANNING, AND OTHER FOOD ISSUES. This is a very important topic for all, especially those drifting away from the basic program. BASIC GUIDELINES FOR SUCCESS AFTER WLS: 1. 3 meals a day on schedule 2. High protein low fat, low starchy carb, low-calorie eating program 3. Eat meat first, crunchy veggies next, and starchy carbs last or avoid 4. Don't drink fluids 30 minutes before or after each meal, don't drink with meals. 5. Chew every bite 25 - 30 times 6. 3-5 minutes between bites, use a timer. ( Can get a 3 minute egg timer at Elliott's) "Those who eat too fast, eat too much." 7. No carbonated beverages of any kind-diet , regular, flavored or unflavored 8. No alcohol 9. Take a multivitamin, calcium with D (2 daily) and Iron/ B12 supplements 10. No smoking 11. Do not increase portion size over time 12. Do regular exercise- keep journal of accomplished short term goal 13. Attend support group meetings regularly 14. Make and keep follow up office visits 15. Have recommended labs on a timely basis 16. Be accountable and responsible to and for yourself 17. Put yourself at the top of each days priority list 18. "If things are out of control" come in before things go to hell in a hand basket. You have not been able to do it on your own in the past. Now is not different. Dr. Gonzalez and I are not your enemies. 19. Remember these guidelines are now and forever. Your obesity is a lifetime issue to conquer on a daily basis. Obesity never takes a day off or a vacation. IT IS ALWAYS WITH YOU!

PLAN TO PARTICIPATE IN THE NORTH DALLAS WALK FROM OBESITY. This is a National Public Awareness and ASMBS Foundation fundraising event being held on several dates. We have chosen September 20, 2008. Medical City Dallas is the primary sponsor this year. The WALK FROM OBESITY is being held at the Cooper Clinic on Preston Road. The event is similar to the Komen Walk for Breast Cancer. The money raised will be used to fund grants for peer reviewed research projects to help understand more about morbid obesity, its consequences, and hopefully long term treatment with successful control of your problems.
