ASMBS Show and Tell
By L. Barzune M.D.
We recently returned from the 25th ASBS (1st ASMBS) meeting in DC. Before the society was founded in 1983, the bariatric surgery meetings were originally held at the University of Iowa (where Dr Gonzalez graduated from). Dr. Ed Mason, father of bariatric surgery as we know it, now retired and professor emeritus, put these programs together. These meetings provided a forum for surgeons to share information and insights about morbid obesity and the surgical treatment. The first bariatric colloquium was held in May or June of 1976. When I attended my first bariatric surgery colloquium in 1979 there were ~125-150 people in attendance. At this years' meeting I am estimating 2500-3000 people in attendance. I used to know just about all of the attendees but, not now. Over the last 29 years of going I am seeing fewer and fewer of the early bariatric surgeons I knew. Now I see the second generation bariatric surgeons who practice with their fathers. Now there is a more youthful leadership and membership. The outgoing president was born the year I graduated high school. The leadership of the ASMBS it is terrific. They have a great vision as to where they want us to take this area of surgery/medicine. This year's slate of officers as well as next year's leadership is a comfortable mix of doctors from private practice and the academic world. As always, there was a menu of courses to take and pathways to follow. Dr. Gonzalez attended the endoscopic and endoluminal surgery (no incision) post graduate course which had a didactic and hands on sessions. He went to a video course demonstrating a variety of surgical techniques, skills and management of complications. We both attended the plenary session. I went to the Center of Excellence program and the associated workshops. I took a masters course in behavior health and a course on gastric restriction-the lap band and sleeve gastrectomy. We both did lots of valuable networking expanding our resources and contacts.
The meeting was divided into 8 sessions:
1. Metabolic surgery for Diabetes 2. Clinically significant studies of general interests. 3. Gastric banding 4. Gastric bypass/gastric sleeve 5. Comparative studies 6. General interest/outcome studies 7. Emerging medical technologies/basic research 8. Complications/revisions surgeries
There were a number of really good papers presented in most of these sessions. Some quite important I think. There were 3 special lectures given: The basic science lecture was exceptional. It was titled Appetite for Hunger: It is all in your head. This was given by Aryam Sharma, M.D. PHD. There were 2 concurrent sessions including a video session on similar topics listed above as well as a primary care clinical tract. This was designed to provide insight and understanding into the problems of morbid obesity and the related issues for the non bariatric surgeon. This way they are better educated and prepared to help you should the occasion arise where they need to see you.

WALK FROM OBESITY The ASMBS foundation is alive, well and in a good place. The funds from individual and corporate donors and the funds raised from the WALK FROM OBESITY are funding quality research. Other projects are also being supported to raise public and professional awareness of the problems of morbid obesity. This year instead of having a fundraising dinner event something innovative was done. They had a WALK FROM OBESITY on the mall to the Capital. Would you believe that over 3000 people participated in the walk, all in white tee shirts with ASMBS Foundation Walk from Obesity logo on the front. Speaking of the WALK FROM OBESITY, MCD is going to be the main sponsor of the Dallas WALK FROM OBESITY. This is a community event that serves as a fundraiser for the ASMBS Foundation as well as a vehicle to raise public and community awareness. People who have the problem of morbid obesity, those who have had surgery anywhere in the area and anyone else interested are invited to join in the WALK FROM OBESITY. You are all familiar with the Susan Komen Walk for Breast Cancer, the Heart Associations Walk for heart disease and Diabetes Walks. This is the same idea except this one is for YOU AND YOUR DISEASE.
Save the date 9-20-2008 for the WALK FROM OBESITY in Dallas. I am optimistic there will be hundreds or maybe over a 1000 of you participating in this necessary event. We all want to WALK away FROM OBESITY , helping us have a healthier and better quality of life. There will be more to follow in the next few weeks.

"BODY IMAGE"
Yvonne McCarthy gave a wonderful presentation of "BODY IMAGE" at the last meeting. Her presentation included a Yoga demonstration showing you what you can accomplish with focus, insight and relaxation. The only disappointment was the low turnout. There are studies available and new information confirming these studies presented at the ASMBS meeting indicating that people participating and attending in support groups have BETTER OUTCOMES AND LONG TERM RESULTS! Having weight loss surgery is for your wellbeing. YOUR SUCCESS is in YOUR CONTROL, with good choices and personal commitments to doing what you can to maximize your best outcome. IF YOU MISSED THIS MEETING AND WOULD LIKE TO SEE HER PRESENTATION LET US KNOW!

In closing from Dr B
Dr. G and I will discuss various topics, technologies and issues that will be of interest at the July 14, 2008 meeting and possibly at the August 11, 2008 meeting should more time be required to present the information. I will summarize the basic science lecture at the next meeting as well as in the next newsletter. It has information ie regarding hunger, appetite, satiety and rewards. This is a fascinating concept. Videos of procedures may be presented at one of the next 2 meetings. The July 14, 2008 meeting will be informative and fun. Bring family, friends and anyone interested in knowing more who would benefit. I am looking forward to seeing you all at the July 14, 2008 support group meeting at MEDICAL CITY DALLAS HOSPITAL 1ST FLOOR, CAFETERIA CLASSROOM, BUILDING A
As always, call if you are having problems. We are available to help! REMEMBER LIFE IS GOOD IF YOU TAKE CARE OF YOU !
