And  LET'S TALK WITH DR G

 Thoughts from Dr Barzune

The Scottish Poet Robert Burns a few hundred years ago must have had body image on his mind when he wrote these lines in one of his poems. "Give me the gift to see myself as others see me"... Or as contemporary poet DR. B. writes: "MIRROR MIRROR ON THE WALL WHY CAN'T I SEE MYSELF SLIM AND SMALL".
Body image is defined as seeing yourself as you are. After a successful weight loss many people continue to visualize their body as they were, not as they currently are. Living with a new and changing body image is a continuing work in progress. Body image is actually more than the way we look at ourselves; it also has to do with perceived self esteem, feelings of value and self worth. The higher your self esteem and self worth are the more positive your body image is. Of course, the opposite is true that the lower your self esteem, feelings of self worth are, the more negative your body image appears to you. The way we feel about ourselves effects the way we see ourselves. There is a certain amount of body image distortion that occurs for many after weight loss surgery. Females have a tendency to perceive themselves heavier than males do. Many females will tell me when they go shopping for the obligatory new fashionable clothes they end up going to the racks that they always went to, which are the clothes for the full figured body, rather than what they really are currently capable of wearing and enjoying.

It is always exciting for me when someone discovers that they can actually get into a size 12!!!!! Especially when they did not think it was possible.

Things That Occur ...

 By L. Barzune M.D.

Other things that occur as a result of your weight loss seem to have an impact on your body image. The body moves differently after weight loss surgery. Feeling awkward can distort the way you see yourself. Some have to re-learn how to move. Our speaker is also going to demonstrate some activities that can be helpful and will improve this particular problem. She is going to discuss many issues revolving around both positive and negative body images. Being a successful weight loss surgery patient, she will share how she has managed to cope with this particular issue from a personal perspective.
However, there are things that I can recommend that will be helpful. Be sure that you have preoperative photographs: front, back and side views, both in and out of clothes. After surgery you should take photographs: front, back and side views, every one to two months and keep a photo album to document the change in your body. Another very helpful exercise is to get butcher block paper, lie down and have someone trace the outline of your body on this paper before you have surgery and then again at the same intervals you are taking photographs. You can watch the incredible shrinking person emerge and blossom. The third recommendation is to save one or two of your pre operative outfits to be able to use for a reality check when you do not think you are actually getting smaller.
THE 3 A's GUIDELINES FOR DEVELOPING AND MAINTAINING A HEALTHY BODY IMAGE:
ATTENTION: Listen to your body and respond to its internal cues. APPRECIATION: Appreciate your success and how much your life has improved with your successful weight loss.    ACCEPTANCE: Accept how you are and let go of the old self.
This material and more will be covered by our speaker Yvonne McCarthy. Yvonne is now 7 years post op successful gastric bypass for morbid obesity and related problems. She is an enthusiastic and accomplished speaker. She has been involved with Obesity Help for a number of years. She recently planned, organized and managed a regional gastric bypass reunion recently for Obesity Help.com. She has served as forum and chat room moderator for Obesity Help.com. She is an engaging personality with a wealth of good information about BODY IMAGE. Ms. McCarthy is very upbeat and positive. I think this is going to be a terrific and engaging support group meeting about something very personal to all. She has started a blog site called Bariatric Girl. This is designed to look at the positive side of weight loss surgery. It is a place to talk about all of the things you can do as a result of surgery that you were not able to do in your last life.   The website is http://bariatricgirl.blogspot.com

Last Month's Support Group Meeting:
Last month's Support group meeting was supposed to be on:  New Approaches for Weight Loss Surgery: Lap Sleeve Gastrectomy and brainstorming your problem issues.  Dr Gonzalez got tied up in an emergency surgery and was unable to make the meeting.  Many apologies for any inconvenience this may have caused.
