It's been a whirlwind week, but thanks to my new amazing intern from CSU, you're receiving this issue of the NEWS on time!!!
Ally has done a great job of gleaning information from a myriad of sources that she thinks you'll find useful and interesting. I agree with her, so read on!
There's a Mind, Body, Spirit fair coming up that you may want to check out. If you know anyone who has lost their job, our own community's Johnna Bavoso has written a book that may help them through this hard time OR you can share the Job Openings listed in the NEWS with them.

Alternative Spring Break - Youth Responding to PovertyUnited Way of Larimer County's Alternative Spring Break program aims to educate and engage teens in volunteer and advocacy work around the issues of poverty and homelessness in Larimer County. Poudre School District Volunteer DriveThe Poudre School District Volunteer Drive is back! Through Friday, February 5, thousands of students from Fort Collins, Rocky Mountain, Poudre and Polaris High Schools will be accepting the challenge to volunteer in the community and raise money to benefit those in need through United Way of Larimer County. Whether or not you have a connection to one of these schools, you can contribute to the cause! To learn more click here. Support Early Childhood Council
The Early Childhood Council (ECC) is excited to announce a local fundraising effort to help support its After School Zone annual conference for school age care providers. This conference annually reaches more than 50 providers including presentations on varied topics.

End Childhood Hunger
The Colorado Department of Education's Nutrition Unit is seeking sponsors to operate the 2010 Summer Food Service Program. The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) was established to ensure that children in low-income areas continue to receive nutritious meals when school is not in session. Free meals that meet federal nutrition guidelines are provided to all children 18 years of age and under at approved SFSP sites. You may qualify to be a sponsor if you are: · A public or private non-profit school food authority · A public or private non-profit residential camp · A public or private college/university participating in the Natl. Youth Sports Program · A unit of local, county, municipal, state or federal government · Any other type of private non-profit organization. Help Kids with Substance Abuse and Mental Health Issues, Support Reflections for Youth Reflections For Youth hosts their annual fundraiser to support substance abuse and mental health treatment for teens in crisis. Book Signing and Celebration From Laid Off To Living, by local author Johnna Bavoso, is a guidebook for people who have been laid off and are on the journey from from shock, disappointment, anger and isolation to the new life they imagine for themselves. Friends who helped Johnna write this book and members of ChangeBuilders™ Support Groups will be at the celebration to share their stories. (The Larimer Workforce Center is piloting ChangeBuilders™ with trained facilitators who will be starting several new support groups in February.) Muzak Heart & Soul FoundationMusic Matters Grants support programs that focus on music education. Public school programs (qualifying for Title I federal funding and serving a minimum of 70 percent low-income students) or nonprofit 501(c)(3) programs directly fund music education (serving students regardless of their ability to pay) are eligible to apply. Amount: $1,000-$12,000 Deadline: February 5
Lowe's Toolbox for Education grant Lowe's Toolbox for Education grant program provides parent groups with financial support to improve their children's schools. Ethnic Community Self-Help Program Purpose: To strengthen organized ethnic communities comprised and representative of refugee populations to ensure ongoing support and services to refugees after initial resettlement. Eligibility: National, regional or local refugee community organizations that address community building, facilitate cultural adjustment and integration of refugees, and deliver mutually supportive functions such as information exchange, civic participation, resource enhancement, orientation and support to newly arriving refugees (and other refugees that maybe in need of such assistance regardless of their resettlement date) and public education to the larger community on the background, needs and potential of refugees. National Summer Learning Association: Excellence in Summer Learning Award Grants are given to recognize outstanding summer programs that demonstrate excellence in accelerating academic achievement and promoting healthy development for young people between kindergarten and 12th grade. Deadline: February 24 Eligibility: Organization, agency, or a collaboration of organizations or agencies; serve young people between kindergarten and 12th grade over the summer months; strive to accelerate academic achievement and promote healthy development as a central goal of the program; have operated a program for at least two summers; demonstrate a strong commitment to equity and to expanding access to summer learning in high-poverty communities. Additional consideration will be given to programs serving disadvantaged communities or populations.

Eligibility: LEAs, including charter schools that are considered LEAs under state law. Amount: Varies Deadline: February 26 Second Annual "Que Llueva Café" Scholarship Chicano Organizing and Research in Education is offering scholarships to provide financial assistance to college-bound, undocumented, Latino students. The scholarships are for undocumented students that have met the rigorous academic requirements asked of them and hold the academic promise to achieve so much more. Colorado Rural Health Care Grants
The Colorado Rural Health Care Grant Program is offering grants to improve the provision of health services in rural Colorado. Eligible entities include primary care providers in rural Colorado who also provide services to underserved people, including those without insurance or those who are covered by Medicaid or the Child Health Plan Plus. Organizations that are located outside of Colorado's urbanized areas that provide outpatient primary care services -- including medical, oral and mental health services -- are eligible to apply. MAC AIDS Fund: Food and Nutrition Community Grants MAC AIDS provides grants to service providers for U.S.-based, 501c3 programs that are providing food, nutrition and housing services to people living with HIV and AIDS. Amount: Up to $50,000. Deadline: March 15
National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS): Outstanding Social Studies Teacher of the Year Award Awards to recognize outstanding social studies teachers. Click here for more information. Amount: $2,500, complimentary one-year membership in NCSS and opportunity to present a session on their work at the NCSS annual conference (including up to $5,000 in transportation/lodging reimbursement to attend the national conference). Deadline: April 1 Eligibility: Social studies teachers for grades K-6, 5-8 and 7-12 who teach social studies regularly and systematically in elementary school settings, and at least half time in middle/junior high and high school settings. NCSS membership is required.
Young Native Writers Contest Provides Scholarships, Student Trips The Holland & Knight Charitable Foundation, Inc. is making funding available for the Young Native Writers Essay Contest. Five first-place winners will be flown to Washington, DC, to visit the Nattional Museum of the American Indian and other prominent sites. Project Coordinator for the Equality in Health Initiative The Partnership for Families & Children (The Partnership) is hiring a Project Coordinator for the Equality in Health Initiative (EIH). The coordinator will be working with the EIH Project Director and the EIH team to implement the established training and technical assistance methodology for this initiative which is funded by The Colorado Trust. The Project Coordinator will work with a multi-member team to support and guide the successful development of select health disparities projects within Colorado. The Project Coordinator will work with these projects to improve effectiveness by: 1) assisting in the development of culturally competent evaluation practices for organizations serving racially and ethnically diverse communities, 2) increasing knowledge of best practices and promising practices in cultural competency and in reducing health disparities, 3) improving health promotion and health care practice through skill development, and 4) building culturally competent. Northside Aztlan Community Center Bilingual volunteers needed to assist with youth activities on Sundays from 3-6pm and Thursdays from 6-8pm. Need Training? TRAIN (TrainingFinder Real-time Affiliate Integrated Network) provides classes for professionals who work to protect the health of the public. TRAIN is a free service of the Public Health Foundation. They advertise classes throughout the country (online and in a classroom) that cover a variety of topics within the community health field. Business Communications Class The Education & Life Training Center (ELTC) announces the newest offering in its employment skills training lineup in response to employer needs. The Business Communications Class is a 16-hour course that provides written communication skills training specific to the workplace. Students will learn how to create clear and concise business communications, including letters, emails, writing for the Web, PowerPoint presentations and marketing materials. Participants will walk away with tools to improve flow, grammar, content and readability of written communications, as well as the formatting tricks to give documents a professional appearance.
