Reminder: Studio is CLOSED July 9th In Memory of Bishnu Charan Gosh
1903 - 1970
Bishnu Ghosh was Bikram's Guru and
greatest influence in his life. For 20 years, Bikram stayed by his side and
learned everything he knows about yoga. Bishnu Gosh was
a celebrated physical culturalist in India and abroad. He was the youngest brother
of Paramahansa Yogananda - author of the best selling Autobiography of a Yogi. Bishnu
traveled world wide and gave amazing demonstrations of the mind's control over the body
. Remember the show "That's Incredible"? Well, that is one way that he first introduce
yoga to North America.
In 1970, Bishnu Ghosh asked Bikram to
"finish his incomplete job", to bring yoga to the rest of the world. Later that
year, Bishnu Ghosh performed mahasamadhi, withdrawing
his Spirit from his body and leaving the Earth.
He was 67. Each year on July 9th
Bikram asks all studios around the world to close in honour of his beloved
Guru.
To find out more about Bishnu Ghosh
read Bikram's newest book "Bikram Yoga" . It is an interesting and educational
read, if you want to know where this yoga comes from.
Also, you can visit www.bikramyoga.com where you can read about the Bishnu Charan Ghosh Fund.

Inspirational Student
Bill Verchere
I have been coming to Bikram Yoga twice a week since last
summer, and have been enjoying it immensely. I live in Ladysmith, am retired, single, have
three children, and will be 77 years old at the end of this month.
I was attracted to yoga because I was acutely aware of my
need to improve my balance, flexibility and posture. As a person gets older,
balance can be a real problem. One of the greatest of fears of elderly people
is the fear of falling, which can bring disastrous results, which most of you
know. I needed to do something about that, and so far, with the help of
Bikram's standing postures, my balance has much improved and given me more confidence.
My flexibility was a major concern too. Stiffness (especially
in the neck) seems to go with old age, and a flexible neck makes for a safer
driving in heavy traffic. My driving is now more enjoyable thanks to yoga.
The number one reason however, why I began yoga was because
of my posture. I was beginning to walk with a hunched back and people kept
asking me to straighten up. Sheer laziness, I suppose. After all, who wants to
end up with a 'dowagers hump'? What
better remedy for this than the Cobra, Full Locust and Bow poses?
I enjoy the invigorating feeling after every class, and
thanks to Bikram yoga the quality of my life has been very much improved.

Featured Posture
Dandyamana-Bibhaktapada Paschimotthanasana Standing Separate Leg Stretching
In this posture you use your strength to increase flexibility and strength. Notice the power you generate by pulling on your heels, it stretches the legs, hips, and spine. Remember to have thigh muscles contracted nice and tight, like a rock, to help you lock your knees.

Benefits: This posture stretches and strengthens the sciatic nerves and the tendons in the legs. It also massages the internal abdominal organs and the small and large intestines. Standing separate leg stretching increases the flexibility in the pelvis, ankles, hip joints and especially the last five vertebrae of the spine.
Bikram's Key: If you are having trouble grabbing underneath your heels, grab anywhere underneath the outside edge of your foot, even if it's just your fingertips. If this is really hard for you, you can put your hands on the floor about 12 inches apart and work on getting your legs locked. Another important tip is to keep your weight forward on your toes.
