Wow!  Back track to spring when I first began Bikram Yoga and I really wonder how I arrived at the place I am at today.  After my first class, like many students, I wasn't sure there was going to be a second class.  Fast forward months later, and utilizing my determination, focus and inner strength evolving from my yoga practice, I challenged one of my greatest fears - heights, and I went bungee jumping.  It was amazing and exhilarating and I highly recommend it!  I was feeling more determined than ever and I sensed I was on a new path.  A week later, Ulli suggested that I try a 12 or maybe a 14 day challenge.  I wondered if I had the commitment as each day was a challenge!  Each day as I began my practice I questioned why am i doing this, when will the torture be over - and I was only in Half Moon!  Yet each day I came back.  And then I found myself on day 14 and I committed to the full 30 day challenge.  For those who have been  through this experience, it is like a roller coaster ride, plunging into fear and soaring with accomplishments, both physical and emotional.  The physical segment I was prepared for but not the emotional and spiritual transformation.  Spiritually, I finally found that quiet place inside myself and when moments become stressful my yoga practice helps me to find a deeper calm to replace the tension.  A whole life of seeking this comfort, and all it took was 30 days of Bikram Yoga.  As I write this, tomorrow marks my 30th class and I feel like a new being.  I am more focused, balanced, and the small stuff is just that, small stuff.  I crave different things now, including more yoga!  My only regret is that I did not keep a diary of my journey.  I am sure I would hardly recognize the person who penned the first entry.  The challenge was far easier than I though it would be all thanks to Ulli, my personal cheerleader, who counted down each and every day with me and when I thought there was not going to be a day 17, she never doubted for a moment there wouldn't be.  I will miss you so much!  Thanks also to Doug, Julie, Mei and Nina for your welcoming faces each and every day and your insightful advice.  In addition, I can't forget the wonderful group of ladies from the 9:30 am classes for creating such a supportive environment.  Will I do another 30 Day Challenge?  You bet!  In fact, just the other day Ulli and Doug mentioned that many students carry on to a 60 day challenge.  Wish me luck!

Some Benefits of Bikram Yoga

eagle

A 90-minute Bikram yoga class burns at least 300-600 calories, with advanced and more active yoga practitioners that burn between 500-1000 calories per class. In contrast to the other types of yoga classes, the heat of Bikram yoga loosens muscles and increases the amount of calories burned during other types of yoga session of the same length. The heat in the Bikram yoga class also helps the entire body to relax, leading to a deeper stretch and helping to avoid injuries. Practitioners of this yoga claim that regular practice will normalize weight, improve muscle tone, and help you enjoy vibrant good health and well-being.

But the amount of calories burned in one Bikram yoga class depends on many different factors, such as actual weight, gender, size, body type, and present body state. To think: How many calories burned in one Bikram yoga class? is a narrow view of yoga, this is simply one of the benefits of practicing yoga.  Many people practice Bikram Yoga as a physical therapy and healing purposes. This type of yoga has proved helpful in bringing body wellbeing benefits, to those who practice it.

In order to be successful, with the healing processes of Bikram Yoga, you need real dedication, because practicing in rooms with a recommended temperature of a minimum of 104 degrees Fahrenheit and about 40% humidity can be a difficult task for many practitioners.

The benefits of Bikram yoga can be summarized in:
- improving of muscle strength
- better cardiovascular workout
- protecting the muscles allowing for deeper stretching
- encouraging detoxification through open pores
- encouraging better circulation
- making fats in the body more fluid and more easily cleared from the body

This type of yoga is a whole-body development. With this type of yoga, muscles are given a thorough workover. Cellular level lipids and proteins are reorganized optimally in such conditions, allowing for better circulation. Joint strength and muscular alignment are better co-ordinated and together with strengthened bones, the organs of the immune system within the bones are boosted.  The lymph nodes are massaged, white blood cells are distributed throughout the body as the lymphatic system works more efficiently, and lymph is pumped throughout the body.
