The Cure for Ailing Letterforms

 Wine and Oil names 2
CONSISTENCY
WITH VARIETY

Why handlettering is better than a typeface

At first glance, all of the names, at left, look alike. And they should; they are part of a series. But if you look closely, you'll see subtle variations throughout. Sometimes the "n"s connect to the next letter, and sometimes not. The shapes of the "t" crossbars vary to suit the letters next to them.

Powers Creative, in northern California, asked me to do this work for Napa Valley Naturals, which produces lines of oils, vinegars, fruit balsamics, and cooking wines. I started by establishing the look. Then, over the span of many years, I created new lettering, as new products were developed.

So, the challenge was to match the original lettering style, while dealing with the specific letter combinations of each new name.
I had to vary the height and shape of letters to create the "bounce" and the sometimes-connected- sometimes-not style. That is the power
and flexibility of custom lettering.

On a personal note, at this time of Thanksgiving, I want you to know that I am very grateful that you are in my life.

Aloha,
John
