Aloha Kalikimaka

Thank you for being part of my life and work this year.
May you and your loved ones be blessed in this season.

Aloha,
John

Hawai'ians did not celebrate Christmas before the missionaries arrived on the Islands. So, of course they had no word for it. "Kalikimaka" is a phonetic translation of "Christmas", using spelling and sounds that were familiar to the Hawai'ians. You may have heard the phrase "Mele Kalikimaka", with "Mele" being a phonetic translation of "Merry". But the more traditional greeting in Hawai'ian is Aloha Kalikimaka.
And while we're at it, Hau'oli Makahiki Hou (Happy New Year).
