The Cure for Ailing Letterforms

 Wonka Brand 3
Wonka Brand Refinement

"The client has already signed off on this, so we can't do major changes. But please fix anything you see that needs fixing." Interestingly,
I get this request quite often from designers who aren't completely happy with a brand, even if their client is.

When CBX, of Fairfax California, sent me the original Wonka Candy brand, I saw that the thin strokes were problematic, especially when the mark was used at a small size or on the Web. So, I adjusted the weights of the white strokes, and made sure that there was enough space between any two white shapes. I adjusted the letterspacing. I made the inline thicker, and moved it further away from the side of the letters. Then I refined the drop shadow.

Ultimately, each detail of every letter was refined, but the essence of the brand remained the same.

Call me the next time you're not completely satisfied with lettering that you'll need to work with for the next few years.

Aloha,
John
