Scoma's, Rocky 2

Do you like mediocrity? I sure as heck don't. Neither do any of the art directors I work with.

When Philippe Becker was given the assignment to redesign a range of materials for the San Francisco landmark restaurant Scoma's, he was also given vector art of their identity. In this case, however, the vector art was an unrefined Live Trace from art that was many generations removed from the original. So Philippe asked me to redraw the logotype.

The Thompson Design Group encountered the same problem when they were updating the Dreyer's (Ice Cream) identity. The little fellow that forms the apostrophe of the logotype is affectionately called "Rocky", in honor of the Rocky Road flavor invented by Dreyer's. Again, I was asked to perform first aid.

The goal in both cases was to retain the essence of the iconic mark so that long-time customers might not even recognize the change, but give the designers clean art to work with.

So call me if you want to sleep better at night.

Aloha,
John
