Habitat for Humanity Meaning of Home Writing Contest
Did you know that there are more than 30,000 homeless people in Canada?  What can you do to help?  Enter Habitat for Humanity's 3rd Annual Meaning of Home Writing contest, and you can help give a family a new home, and win cool prizes, too.

The contest is open to students in grades 4, 5 and 6, and runs from October 5 to November 13, 2009.

The grand prize winner will receive a new desktop computer, and, more importantly, the chance to provide the ultimate gift: a new Habitat home for a deserving family.

For more info about this exciting contest, visit the Habitat for Humanity website.

 Spooky Books for Kids

Fall is in the air and it's almost Halloween.  That means it's the perfect time to curl up and read some spooky stories.  We have lots of great novels that will send chills down your spine, including:

Coraline - Looking for excitement, Coraline ventures through a mysterious door into a world that is similar, yet disturbingly different from her own, where she must challenge a gruesome entity in order to save herself, her parents, and the souls of three others.

The Crossroads - When eleven-year-old Zack Jennings moves to Connecticut with his father and new stepmother, they must deal with the ghosts left behind by a terrible accident, as well as another kind of ghost from Zack's past.

Revenge of the Witch - Young Tom, the seventh son of a seventh son, starts work as an apprentice to the village spook whose job it is to protect ordinary folk from "ghouls, boggarts and all manner of wicked beasties."

Secret of Grim Hill - Cat Peters has just started attending Darkmore High, but she can't shake the feeling that there's something just not right about the old school on the hill, and her worries are confirmed when she and her friends uncover a mystery about an entire soccer team that disappeared many years ago.

The Seer of Shadows - Fourteen-year-old Horace, a photographer's apprentice, becomes entangled in a plot to create fraudulent spirit photographs, but when Horace accidentally frees the real ghost of a dead girl bent on revenge, his life takes a frightening turn.

City Animals
What kind of animal is quite small, has a pink nose and a long tail? Who can perch on the edge of a building and looks for bread crumbs on the sidewalk? This brightly coloured picture book with fold out pages is a great guessing game for young kids. Can you figure out who all the animals are?  Borrow this book and find out.
