Artist of the Month
Irmaos Verdades
Zouk (pronounced "zook") is a style of rhythmic music originating from the islands of Guadeloupe, Martinique and the former French colony of Haiti. Becoming popular in the 1980's, zouk means "party" or "festival" in the local creole of French with English influences. Its cultural orgins are shared with those of South America: (Brazil, etc.) and Africa: (Angola, Cape Verde, Réunion, Mozambique etc.) On the African islands of Cape Verde they have developed their own type of zouk. The Brazilian music and dance group Irmaos Verdades formed in 1986, incorporating fourteen musicians and dancers in all, including members of the Duo Ouro Negro (Black Gold Duo).
