Dear Fair Chance community,
While students across the city ended another school year, our partners went into high gear. Many organizations celebrated youth completing their after-school programs, honored their graduates, and kicked off their summer programs.
Here at Fair Chance we have lots of exciting things to share. We had an amazing event with our 130 Butterfly Bash Host Committee Members, hosted by our Co-Chair's Megan Rupp and Julie Maner to rev-up for the Butterfly Bash scheduled for October 14th. On June 2nd, we had a very successful and lively Executive Director Breakfast where 13 Directors from our current and alumni partners discussed ways we can improve our programs and do more for youth in the city.
Lastly, I am excited to share that the DC Promise Neighborhood Initiative has asked me to serve on their Capacity Building Task Force. I see this as an opportunity for us to share our expertise, continue working towards eliminating poverty, and giving every child a Fair Chance to succeed. I look forward to being a part of the Promise Neighborhood Initiative to help establish it as an effective non profit organization. Together we can work to improve the outcomes for the 30,000 DC youth living below the poverty line.
As always thank you for being a continued supporter of Fair Chance. We couldn't do the work we do without you in our corner.
-Maria Nagorski, Executive Director

Bash Host Committee Gets to
Work for DC
Max Skolnik of Kid Power inspires Fair Chance Champions as we start our 130-day countdown to The 5th Annual Butterfly Bash!
On Wednesday, May 25th Fair Chance staff and board were joined by an incredible group of 130 Host Committee Members to kick off our 2011 Butterfly Bash fundraising campaign. Megan Rupp and Julie Maner who hosted the evening announced an anonymous $15,000 challenge grant for all new and increased sponsorships. They also announced Katharine Weymouth as Honorary Chair. Check out pictures from the event on facebook.
Max Skolnik, Executive Director of Kid Power shared how a Fair Chance partnership can help move an organization from good to great.
"Fair Chance's assistance enabled Kid Power to grow from a small start-up to a city institution, from an organization working with scores of youth to one serving hundreds. We went from 3 paid staff members to 40, from 3 program sites to 10, and from a budget of several hundred thousand dollars to nearly $1 million. In the process, we merged with two organizations; dramatically improved program models and evaluation and youth feedback systems; and developed as an innovative, dedicated, and sustainable provider of youth services. None of this would have been possible without Fair Chance."
The Fair Chance Butterfly Bash Host Committee is fully activated to reach their goals of bringing over 500 people to the event and raising over $165,000.

Jr. Fair Chance Champions Devote Their Bat Mitzvah Project to Giving Every Child a Fair Chance
Sammie and Rachael Cooper wanted to do something special to help out children and youth in DC. So, along with the help of their parents Jeff Cooper and Julia Baer-Cooper, they raised a total of $632 at a bake sale on Dupont Circle May 21st. Sammie and Rachael understand that resources and opportunities are not equally available to all kids in the city so they donated 100% of their proceeds to Fair Chance.
Thanks to their hard work, Fair Chance can continue to build the capacity of youth-serving organizations in DC. Fair Chance is proud to add Sammie and Rachael Cooper to our Community Champions Circle!
