Dear President Obama
Playtime Catches the Olympic Spirit

Playtime's play-based curriculum is back, and August is kicking off with a week spent celebrating the Summer Games. Kids will make their own Olympic medals and flags, and get the opportunity to participate in their own Olympic games. At the end of the week, the kids will have honed both fine and gross motor skills, and learned about colors, shapes, and countries around the world. Additionally, they will improve their self-esteem and enjoy fun physical activities!
Meet Playtime's Southeast Additions:
 Valley Place and Griffin House!

Nine children, three volunteers, parents, and playroom creators from Bright Horizons joined together to cut the ribbon and throw open the doors to Valley Place's brand new playroom last Monday!

Kids loved getting to play the guitar, dressing up, creating sand and glue masterpieces in the art corner and listening to volunteers read while munching on watermelon and carrots.  Parents were thrilled to have time to do laundry and clean!   dress up vp

Griffin House also began Playtime this week, with 12 children and lots of outdoor energy!

We are so excited for our new Southeast Playtime presence! Volunteers are needed; email Lana if you would like to join the team! Thank you to our Southeast Expansion sponsors who made these playrooms possible!

Teens Take in an Afternoon of Art

Last weekend, our teens toured the African American Art Exhibit at the Smithsonian's American Art Museum! african american art

To prepare, each teen spent
Teen Night analyzing one piece of art and reflecting on African American Civil Rights history and sharing their impressions with the group. When they saw the real thing in the museum, the youth were thrilled to see "their" piece hanging on the wall and knew more about the art after studying it beforehand. When allowed, teens took pictures of the art on their phones to preserve the experience.
Hanging at Busboys

To add some relaxation time to all the museum-trekking, the group enjoyed a delicious lunch at Busboys & Poets. It was a great day taking on the wonderful cultural opportunities in our city!

Backpack Drive
spring break backpacksIn the midst of the summer heat, it may hard to believe this, but back-to-school is right around the corner! To help our kids conquer the classroom, we aim to provide each Playtime participant with a new backpack full of school supplies to help them start the year off right. We'd love for you to organize a backpack drive in your school, workplace, or neighborhood. If interested, email us for more information.
