Playtime Battles Summer Brain Drain
|
Summer means lot of great things at Playtime: warm weather, outdoor activities, and delicious summer fruits for snack.
Unfortunately, summer also means learning loss for kids who are not in summer school.
Playtime's Summer Reading Initiative is designed to help combat "brain drain" during the summer months! Our playrooms are stocked with books, and throughout the summer, our volunteers will inspire a love of reading by giving out small reward for reading, reading aloud at snack time, and sending kids home with books so they can start libraries of their own!

Nine Girls Cross the Finish Line!
| |
On June 2nd, nine girls from DC General Shelter showed what they are made of in their first-ever 5K race to finish their season with Girls on the Run. With their parents cheering them on and volunteers running by their sides, the girls finished with smiles on their faces. What an achievement after a spring of twice weekly practices. Congratulations team!
This completes Playtime's first season of partnering with Girls on the Run to bring this exercise, teamwork and self-esteem building program to girls in 3rd-5th grade. At DC General, this meant that every Tuesday and Thursday, more than 12 girls got to be part of a team even while their family dealt with the instability of homelessness.
A team of outstanding women made this great program happen; they adapted the powerful Girls on the Run curriculum for practices held in the shelter hallways and around the building, led inspiring team-building activities, fundraisers, and had their team's back at all times. Thank you GOTR Coaches!

Freedom School comes to DC General this Summer!
| |
For the first time, 50 children at the DC General Emergency Family Shelter are enjoying "Freedom
School", a renowned summer reading program developed by the Children's Defense Fund (CDF). For six weeks, children between the ages of 5-12 have day-long programming in our playrooms and two other classrooms in the shelter thanks to a unique partnership between HCPP, CDF, the National Center for Children and Families, and the city. We are excited to welcome the Freedom School model to the shelter and watch our children thrive!
